the new Thing is actually a prequel to the Carpenter version....the carpenter version started off with the American research group in Antartica finding the swedes shooting at their dogs from a Helicopter and then the swedes are killed. the americans go to the Swedich station to see what happened and find the alien.
the new movie is about the swedish research station finding the alien.....from what I understnad anyway

One of the things that is genius about the 1982 film is the way the video tapes that the characters find in the Norwegian camp sort of resemble scenes out of the 1951 film.

It's almost as though Carpenter has made a sly sequel rather than a remake.

I think you should watch the new one first...because it's a PREQUEL...then watch Carpenter's...which continues the story...

^ The new one looks good because basically, it's a shot for shot REMAKE of the Carpenter film. I saw it the other night and was absolutely flabbergasted at how much was ripped directly off Carpenter. That director has NO shame-- It's funny because I wanna slam the movie, but I can't because I adore the Carpenter film. This "prequel" is SO derivative, that if you're a fan of Carpenter, it's hard not to dig it.

It's kind of like looking at one of those almost perfect copies of the great masterpieces-- They're impeccably done and gorgeous works of art in and of themselves. However, they're merely stroke for stroke copies of the original.

                              SC
