I think both are fine, but if I have to pick I'd say Downey Jr.

For one thing all the rolls I can think of where Depp is using a British accent are characters that are fairly over-the-top (From Hell, The Pirates Movies), where as Downey Jr.'s characters with accents have been played a little straighter (Chaplin, Sherlock Holmes).

            Exactly.

I think Depp's is more exaggerated...Downey's is smoother and more natural...at least that's how I see it (you as well).

My young lad...this thread is about two AMERICAN actors doing a British accent...not British doing the obvious....

Too tough a call Hector; they both seem pretty convincing to me. Now, if you're looking for worst accent ever......

Don't forget Costner in Robin Hood.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

No, a Baltimoron living in Florida; but I used to work here in the US for a company outside of Manchester and have spent a little time in that area and in London.

Yeah, Oldman just can't do a British accent, I don't know why he even tries.

It seems rare for an American actor to really be able to do a naturally sounding British accent. British actors, on the other hand, seem much better at doing American accents. Like Hugh Laurie in House.
