I've walked by a few times, never went in. In 1993 I was in NY visiting friends and we were passing by so they pointed out where it had been bombed. I didn't see much.

My wife and I were there in '97 and the observation deck was closed that day for cleaning. I figured I'd go up the next time we were there, but even though we visited the city quite frequently, I never did. In May 2001 we were visiting some friends in Astoria and we went to Mets game. I took a picture of the towers in the distance from the promenade of the stadium. Last photo I took of the towers. It's all good!Comment

Comparing the WTC to The Empire State Building ...
The WTC had a better observation deck (roof and enclosed below roof)
The Empire had more a feeling of history when you're inside ... The WTC felt more like any other office building compared to the Empire
So they both had their advantagesComment

I was at the base of the buildings listening to a band exactly a week before 9/11. They had a concert series of small bands that would play after work. I remember lying back and looking up at the two towers -- they seem to converge when you looked straight up -- I think there are pictures like this.
I lived in NJ all my life and never went to the top of the WTC. I took the PATH train under and went to the shops below but never went up. It was on my to-do list.
I know one person that lost his life that day. My cousin escaped.Comment

Yep. Four different times going to and from Boston. I actually stopped over and had a visit with a friend who lives there. I remember getting on the LIE and going over the GW Bridge. Of course he had to explain all that to me. I always wanted him to take me to see the sights but the time just never worked out.sigpic WANTED: Boxed, Carded and Kresge Carded WGSHComment

As for me, I grew up in Brooklyn, NY and I went up on a few school/day-camp trips in the mid 1970s and when relatives visited back then as well. I’m not really afraid of heights and went up on my buildings roof (4 stories) as a kid, but the WTC was completely different. The glass windows were fully from floor to ceiling. So it was really scary—at least to me at the time—to go up close to the windows they had on the upper floors. I remember being freaked as a kid and crawling on all fours to get to the safety of the closest wall… THE GIFT SHOP! But never bought anything. Truth be told I hated the buildings as architecture. The top of 30 Rockefeller Center and the Empire State Building feel so comfortable and human to me. The WTC Towers never felt human; it was so cold and sterile.
Past that I main remember going to the mall just below street level with my dad a few times. Remember seeing a Timex Sinclair 1000 on display and being impressed with it! Also transferred a lot from the Cortland Street station to the PATH to NJ there. And someone else mentioned it, but there were some free concerts in the area between the towers back in 2001 and I remember going to a few.
Oh, I also was quizzical about Philippe Petit as a kid. That guy did that? He’s nuts! But as an adult who can truly comprehend the size and scope of his tightrope walk… Holy crap! That guy did that? Really? With those winds? That high up? It’s still almost impossible to comprehend.Last edited by MicromanZone; Sep 9, '11, 1:51 AM.Comment

I was in the lobby with a friend once and we wanted to go to the observation deck but it was packed with tourists so we left.
The week before 9/11, I was having the usual troubles w/the trains commuting to work. I was coming in late almost every day. I was experimenting with taking the E train to the WTC stop. So I was coming up from the train, passing thru the underground mall and walking to work from there. I liked to browse at Borders Books before catching the train home. For whatever reason I did not take the E train to WTC that morning and I managed to avoid the carnage. People we knew at Moody's Ratings, right on the scene, told us things no one should ever have to see. I always feel bad for those people and what they saw happen.
A side note, my Father worked for Verizon and they had these cryo-tanks strapped to some gate or pole right outside the buildings. They used to make my Father go there nearly every day to check they were full. He finally got tired of doing it because he was supposed to be in charge of a Tool Room on Varrick St. I'm so glad he got out of it because he likely would have had to go down there to check the tanks that day. If they had sent him early enough he might have been right in the middle of all that chaos.Last edited by johnmiic; Sep 9, '11, 2:48 AM.Comment
