I work in a 4 story building. My office is on the 2nd floor. My bosses office is on the 3rd floor. My brother lives in the "penthouse" on the 4th floor. My boss buzzes down to me and asks if my brother is home because it sounds like someone is running and jumping on the 4th floor. I go up to check and no one is home. I took my cell phone and, as I am looking, my wife calls me and tells me our daughter just called and said the house was shaking for 15 seconds. So, that was my first clue it was an earthquake. We have never had one here that I know of. My son calls me and asks if my brother's huge wooden clock is still hanging because he and my brother hung it yesterday. It wasn't secured properly and my son told him they better do it in case we get an earthquake. He was totally joking as we have never had one. Next day we get one. Bizarre.

I felt it all the way up here in Maine! The house was swaying, I thought I was getting dizzy.

I'm in NYC and felt it. I has leaning against a wall at the time.

The very first day I lived in Portland, I felt an earthquake. Our furniture hadn't arrived yet and I was sitting in a window still when I felt the wall shaking a bit. I was wondering what we were getting into! I've only noticed one more in the 12 years I've been here. Luckily we never had a serious one here, but I guess we are overdue for a big one.

Actually, the first thing I thought was a terrorist attack had just occurred. I am 50 miles outside of Washington D.C. so it's almost a conditioned response since we rarely feel any earthquakes around here. Now that I know what happened; I'm ok with after shocks.
Same thing I thought of, too. I am only about 20 miles outside of DC at work. My mind first went to Earthquake, but then since it was only like 10 sec long I thought something created that rumble. Actually glad it was an earthquake. There was an aftershock, but it was only 2.8.
                  It's all good!

I'm here in Richmond. There were a few reports of structural damage, some traffic lights out, etc. in the area. But sounds like no real injuries. And no damage at the house. But it was a little eerie. Especially when I pulled up the earthquake coordinates on Google maps. "Wait, isn't that where the North Anna nuclear plant is?" I think it only hit about 15 miles away for it...

Didn't feel anything here in the Ohio Valley (at least I didn't), but earthquakes are a very, very weird thing to experience. We had a small one rumble through here a few years back and it almost feels like the earth is trying to shrug you off. Very strange sensation. Anyway, hope everyone is A-OK who was within the quake's radius...!
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Pretty good analogy. The weird feeling is looking off into the NYC horizon, realizing this thing centered in Virginia yet we felt it all the way here. Pretty astonishing when you think of the sheer power of something like that. And pretty humbling when you realize this was 100% nothing compared to other recent earthquakes.

Pretty astonishing when you really think about the fact that if the earth's crust moves just a wee bit, most everything man ever constructs can be laid waste in a matter of seconds. Mother Nature, Act of God--whatever you want to call it---humans ain't got a thing on either one (except, or course, for the A and H Bombs...)
