    Let's see...

I had to take the public bus in NYC (w/ school issued bus passes every month) in 7th grade and that ride took about 15 mins. And in high school, I had to take the school bus (in San Juan Capistrano when I lived w/ my dad) to my high school in Mission Viejo and w/ all the stops it took maybe 20 mins. In my junior year, when I had 1st period free and couldn't catch the school bus (I had to get my younger half brother and sister ready for school), I took the public bus (or caught a ride w/ a friend), and that took 10 mins.

When I lived on the farm in the early 70s, it was typically 45 minutes or so.. That seems about right.

20 minutes. I was fortunate. mine was the last pick and first drop off. by 9th grade a buddy of mine had a car so bus riding pretty much ended at that point.

We lived way out in the sticks and our bus ride was usually about an hour. Being so far out, we experienced so many great things on our bus ride, including hitting deer, and having a hunter shoot out the rear window of the bus.

However, the highlight had to be winter picture day during my freshman year; I was dressed in a skirt and heels on that day when the bus got stuck in a snow drift. The rescue bus wouldn't make it down the road, so we had to walk almost a mile out to the plowed road. Walking a mile through calf deep snow in a skirt and heels was not a good thing.

Once I got my license, I drove my car every day. Every day, except of course, drive-your-tractor-to-school day. Gotta love living in the sticks!

                      Follow-up question ..............

Was your bus the kind that had 2 rows of 3 person bench seats ?

or ... 1 row of 4 person benches and 1 row of 2 person benches ?

We had both depending on the year

I only rode busses to sporting events in High School. Walked to schools in the same town for 13 years, K-12.

                        According to Google Maps...

K-5 was 1/10th of a mile from my house (possibly 2/10th's depending on the classroom). Some years I could run home after the 3 o'clock bell and be home before the Opening theme song from Spiderman was over.

6-8 was the worst, 1.1 miles, and after the previous 6 years, a real eye opening bummer. The worst was the world's best bakery (in my eyes) was halfway between home and school, and the vast majority of my lunch money was spent and eaten before I ever got to school most days.

High School is listed as 1 mile even, but we crossed a brook via a rope that we tied up to cross it, and shaved off about a quarter mile that way, to the annoyance of the neighbors who owned the house that backed up to the brook. We fell through the ice and showed up with cold wet feet more than once though.

I lived out in the country from 11 on up. So, from the sixth grade until I was 16 (drivers license), I rode a school bus to and back home. I was about 45 minutes each way with all of the stops, etc.

Two rows ...two to three kids per seat (generally just two per seat). Full sized school bus.

45 minutes to a hour and I hated every bit of it.
