I used to spend a lot of my summers with my sister in Florida, so I have very fond memories of going to a really cool store down there [I can't remember the name of it now, dang it, but it was in either Pompano Beach or Fort Lauderdale] that was kind of along the lines of a Consolidated Sales or Woolco/Woolworth's only better and picking out all my cool superhero pocket folders and spiral bound notebooks. Plus the smell of all the new erasers and pencils and various school "stuff" is a fond memory. And, of course, who can forget the GREAT smell of the stuff the teachers used to run on the old mimeograph machines!

I do agree that school is starting waaaay too soon these days, but I guess they do it now because [at least in our area] if they even mention the word "snow" in the forecast during the winter, the schools are usually either dismissed early or called off altogether....!
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

And you are so so right, Anthony. Life WAS simpler then. I miss that simplicity.

Then: The Marvel superhero-themed folders by Mead.

Now: Steady work and $$ for my Mrs as she takes our neighbor kid to school each day, then child-sits until Mom comes home each night.

Tax free days, and the fact that I don't have to do anything for "back to School".

I was going to mention a fresh Trapper Keeper as well. Those things would become mangled and unuseable by year's end. I'll also add new folders as well. It was always nice to walk into school the first day with notebooks clean and organized and trying in vain to keep it that way. I would usually last a couple of weeks before I had pieces of paper sprawling every which way.

Fall soccer season, but then that was with the YMCA, so I guess I don't have one. Endless Summer.

I liked picking out new shoes, lunchbox, and folders; but I hated trying on clothes. My mom insisted that everything be a size bigger which drove me crazy. It was smart on her part so stuff would fit me longer, but I hated wearing a belt to hold up my pants every fall.
