Your favorite part of getting ready to go "Back to school"

I'm kinda sad b/c I remember when we went back to school after Labor Day, and so many kids are going back next week or the week after. But it does make me think of my 2 of my favorite parts of Back to School time.

I remember going into the grocery store and seeing that gigantic wall of lunchboxes. I'd stare longlingly at the pyramid of lunchtime goodness, knowing that if I asked, I'd be denied (again!) one of these beauties. My mom was a firm believer in the almighty brown bag. She just didn't understand the importance of the lunchobox; it was like getting a new car to a grown-up. Lucky, right before 4th grade my friend took pity on me and gave me her Bobby Sherman lunchbox and her sister gave me her plain red thermos.

My other favorite part was getting new shoes. I was a Buster Brown baby. I would watch those commercials and tell my mom exactly the shoes I wanted. We walked across Broadway (near my house) and get the shoes, and a balloon. Here's one of those commercials. I had the Topsies:

What was your favorite part of getting for Back To School time?

The only thing I always associated with going back to school was it's around the same time is when the TV networks started their fall scheduals

So you got good with bad ... bad, for back to school --- good because it was time for new Buck Rogers

I'm right there with you regarding the wrongness of the pre-Labor Day start to school; I always started back the day after Labor Day, so that marked the end of summer to me (of course, I graduated high school nearly 30 years ago!). My kids have to start back on August 22nd - that just seems wrong to me, with a couple of good summer months wasted in the classroom! I remember the adjustment I went through starting college before August was out, I can't imagine going to grade school that early!

My favorite part of back-to-school (if I really have one) would definitely be the new lunch box ! I didn't get one every year, but in all I probably had 5 of them, and all were pretty much trashed by the end of the school year. My first one, as I recall, was a Peanuts one. I also had a handed-down Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea one (from an older brother).

As I got older, I also recall getting at least some excitement over buying new school supplies. In particular, I had a mead Data Center/Organizer or somesuch with Marvel Comics pictured on the front and back. Usually, though, I just lamented the end of another glorious fun-filled summer spent swimming, biking, building tree houses and other similar pursuits!

Yeah, I gotta say that as a teacher now that I am probably worse at the B2S phase than ever.

I don't enjoy it one bit because I feel like I am being pulled in via the Death School's Tractor Beam!!!

(of course, I love my job and would never trade it! . . . .so, please indulge me here)

Remember the new pairs of shoes and new clothes. Didn't really care about either until I was older. Still remember my mom had a complete cow when I wanted a pair of Levi's when I entered Jr. High. I was used to Toughskins and although fine for Elementary School not so cool for Jr. High. She finally broke down and bought me a pair. I think I wore that pair of jeans at least 3 days a week. I was also in lunchbox Heaven. Only had a couple over my life (one was Adam-12 and Washington Redskins). They were also both trashed by the time I was done with them and rebought both as an adult (The Redskins box is actually pretty rare).

A fresh Trapper Keeper? New lunchbox. New crayons? Those wonderful cardboard school boxes they used to make us buy?
