I know a lot of us are boxing fans and I was just watching some of Jerry Quarry's fights on youtube. I think today a prime Quarry is heavyweight champ of the world. The guy was a terrific puncher and was always in your face. He beat the likes of Ken Norton, Ernie Shaver and Jimmie Ellis. The guy would absorbe the Russian brothers punches and go on to knock them out late. Any other thoughts?

Didnt Quarry get koed against Norton? And I believe Ellis beat him on points. Its tough to say how well he would stand up against the Klitschos. Jerry Q took alot of punches, he might have lost on cuts against either Wlad or Vitali, if he catches Wladamir then he wins, wlad doesnt have a great chin, Vitali though can take a decent shot.
Its a tough call. Overall the heavyweights of today are boring and weak.

A focused and properly trained Cooney would possibly defeat wladimir. But now looking up on this thread Gerry Cooney did not fight Shavers. And Cooney beat a washed up Norton.
Gerry Cooney was like Mike Tyson, they hated to train. I knew both Cooney & Tyson, both cool guys, but they could have done so much better. I guess thats how it is with many of those athletes though, get caught up in the fast lane.

Quarry went toe to toe with Frazier in his prime...nuff said. If Jerry Quarry were around today he'd easily walk through the weak heavyweight division, assuming the Klitchko's size wouldn't give him problems.
One the the most under-rated heavyweights simply because his time fell the same time as Ali, Norton, Frazier and Foreman.Check out my website: Megozine Covers - HomeComment

I think almost any version of Quarry could be expected to take out Wlad at any time. Vitali is tougher for me to call. I think a low mileage Quarry would do it, but Vitali has a much better chin. An aging, unfocused Lennox Lewis busted-up Vitali. It's hard for me to convert that to make a prediction of how Quarry would do.
I always liked Cooney. For a brief moment, it looked like he was going to give big George some trouble. Another guy who I think could be a champ today is Alex Stewart.Comment

I mean...he got knocked out by skinny Michael Spinks and an old Foreman...but I gotta give it to him...he was very game against Larry Holmes...even in defeat...that was Cooney's most impressive fight.
Now Gerry Cooney vs Tommy Morrison...a left-hookers' dream fight...I'd pay good money to see that one even now...lol.Last edited by Hector; Jul 8, '11, 9:43 PM.sigpicComment

Speaking of guys who hung tough with Larry, how's about terrible Tim Withers****?
I'd love to see a prime Morrison in with Wlad with a no Knockdown rule in effect.Comment

Man by reading these posts it really makes me miss the 70's, 80's and most of the 90's Heavyweight boxing scene.
Even the weak chinned Frank Bruno made very cool fights to watch. And yes Cooney did shake big George with that hook. Cooney was so done after the Holmes fight though. Like I said, he barely trained. Cooney lived a few miles from me in NY. I actually chatted with Gerry on Facebook last month, he seems to be doing well.Comment
