The Americans were heavily favorites and I think they kind of took the Japs lightly"Time to nut up or shut up"-Tallahassee

Yes...they did choke during the penalties...there's no question about that.
3 misses in a penalty shootout? Not good.
That was some serious fighting spirit from the Japanese girls though. It looked as if they were half the size of the Americans (not that it matters in soccer). They were under huge pressure for most of the game, a goal down twice, but never gave up.
Yes...Americans choked in the end...but let's not take away from the fighting spirit of the Japanese...they never gave up...they never surrendered...and ultimately...you have to admire that.Last edited by Hector; Jul 17, '11, 4:45 PM.sigpicComment

Good luck. All I can go by really is having watched World Cup play and Chile, Paraguay, and Argentina all play USA men in friendlies. I know Paraguay beat the U.S. but it wasn't a thumping while Chile and Argentina played to a draw. Brazil may not be the team it used to be, but they figure out how to win which is why I give them an edge. Same with Argentina. They are both just juggernaut soccer nations that they seem to step up (just like all powerhouse teams do) when the tension increases.Comment

This was a good opportunity for Mexico to have sent its first team...now that Argentina and Brazil are out...Mexico has always matched up well against the rest of the South American teams...but oh well...the hell with them then...

Japan also had some bad luck...especially that offside called against them...where the Japanese forward was all alone to score...but was called back...they could've been up by a goal at that point.
But wee should not make excuses on bad luck for either side...you win games by kicking/heading the ball into the net...period.
The game was pretty even...the game was lost because the Americans choked in the penalty kicks...simple as that.
And I'm saying this despite the fact that I was rooting for the USA...but I have to look at the result in a fair and balanced manner.Last edited by Hector; Jul 17, '11, 6:32 PM.sigpicComment

You have to question USA's coach, Pia Sundhage a bit, she substituted two players for this game...the big one...benching the struggling Amy Rodriguez...sure...she was a bit off...but she had been the most successful player against Japan in the past...scoring three goals against them in the past meetings between the two...I dunno if that was a strategic mistake...Sundhage almost brought in Rodriguez near the end of the game...but backed off when USA scored its second goal...so...we will just never know.sigpicComment
