This one doesn't quite qualify but I saw the opening of Independence Day in Clifton Park, NY and it got a standing ovation at the end.

Star Wars. I had been following the buzz in various entertainment magazines and was really looking forward to it. There had been mention of it partially being a tribute to the old serial movies which got me interested (These same serial movies were the main fare for the children's matinees on Saturday in the early 1960's) plus the prospect of a state of the art Sci-Fi movie.

The theatre wasn't even half full.

I enjoyed it so much I stayed for the late viewing.

The Empire Strikes Back was jam packed on opening night. When the Prologue started to roll up on the screen the whole theatre cheered. It was corny but absolute fun!

Planet of the Apes (I was about six years old, lol), Star Wars, Superman, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Alien, Batman, The Exorcist, Jaws, Enter the Dragon...and Close Encounters of the Third Kind...were probably the most memorable ones for me.

Although to be totally honest...I don't recall if all were on opening day...but within the first week at least.

Have seen a ton of opening day movies - mostly science fiction. Two stand out. First, 2001 A Space Odyssey. Saw it in actual Cinerama on opening night. That huge curved screen was really awesome. I still have the program for the movie. Second, I saw Star Wars on opening night. It was mobbed, got tickets for the last show that night, and still have the May The Force Be With You button they handed out at the door.
