Ah.. Sorry, Mr. West, that is not correct.

You do not need paranthesis around the 2 for order of calculation: A number outside a paranthesis relationship is automatically multiplied against the contents of what's inside the paranthesis before any further calculation (2nd only to processing the internal contents) to come up with the proper quotient, which is 24 in this case.

Three Sources support my answer..:
1) Mathway.com (just checked my facts.., go ahead and try it, under 'Algebra'..)
2) My 'rocket scientist' cousin (more a proud computer geek, actually..)
3) A German Math Ph.d I just emailed (he stayed with my wife and I for a few months here in the States..)

All three answered "2".

48/(2(9+3)). There were no parenthesis around the two so it moves left to right unless there are parenthesis so the answer is 288.

The correct answer is: It doesn't matter. I've never dealt with an equation like this since high school.

Yes, the answer is 2.. It was not entered correctly. It is technically not a 'Summation', but 'Division', so Excel did not understand/observe the computing process involved.

Incidentally, it's a/b=c, where a is called the dividend, b the divisor and c the quotient. We're looking for the quotient.

It is 288 based on order of operation. Items in parenthesis are first (9+3)=12

Next is division and mulitiplication with neither trumping the other so it then moves left to right. 48/2=24x12=288.
