A bit off topic but speaking of not trusting fortune tellers ...

I don't believe them either, but I do have a true story ...

Around 15 years ago my older sister went to a fortune teller --- only because her friend got her a free gift certificate for a reading on her birthday.

The fortune teller gave her lottery numbers to play (pick-6)
She told her to play them every week for 2 months.

The second from the last week of the 2 month deadline my sister was extra busy that week and just plain forgot to buy a ticket.

ALL THE NUMBERS CAME UP !!!

That is no bullcrap --- I seen the numbers right after she got them.

Up until the day she died she couldn't talk about it, it upset her too much.

But, that same fortune teller told her she would die at 74 years old.

In reality, she died at 58

So I don't know what to think.

    Everything above is true .......

Here is how you know all Psychics and Fortune tellers are full of crap.

How many of these jerk-wads predicted Spet. 11, 2001 would happen? How many knew it would happen and warned people don't go into the buildings on 9/11?

      0

That says to me they should all be shut down/put outta' business. If you couldn't predict 9/11 and save 1 life you have no business claiming you can see the future.

It's scary as hell - Toronto is less susceptible to earthquakes because of where it's situated land-wise, but it does happen and we're near a huge fault-line. One of our biggest nuclear generators was built on the fault-line as well.

BUT - no one can predict earthquakes.

I can understand your fear, but as Hector already pointed out if you listen to the video they don't really predict anything specific

There's just tons of fear mongering that goes on, and it tends to find an audience after terrible things like the recent events happen. There's this horrible guy named Ken Ring who claims to predict earthquakes and is gaining supporters. How does he do it? He picks places on the planet where they experience the most earthquakes - his predictions cover nearly 20 days a month each month - he ignores and deletes all the days his predictions miss - and makes a big deal about the times he guesses correctly (or even gets close). This is how most people who practice "predictions" work, and anyone could do it.

Well - this is kind of convoluted to unravel. In hindsight predictions get more accurate because people forget predictions that don't hit - so to come up with anything meaningful or testable it's a matter of looking at statistics for both the hits and the misses.

If we take your sister's story at face value (which we have to, because she doesn't have any evidence, she didn't actually win) on the surface it's interesting because it's a "hit", but we don't have evidence of the "misses" to weigh how accurate this old lady was, right?

Also, the probability of picking winning lottery numbers is very very low - but the probability of someone winning the lottery is very high. If we agree that every person who wins the lottery isn't psychic and it's just a mathematical probability that someone will just guess correctly - then it's not impossible that this old lady could have just guessed correctly too. Again, taking the story purely at face value.
