This commercial ticked me off and I'm not even a dad.

It's a Tide commercial where a dad is outside and sees on the clothesline a rather skimpy skirt of his teenage daughter's.

The dad doesn't like the idea of her wearing a skirt that short so he uses it as a rag to wipe his hands. He tosses the skirt in the trash as he comes into the kitchen.

Now, I don't quite agree with what he did but I sure understand and empathize with his motivation.

Well, the mom finds the skirt in the trash, washes it in Tide and returns it to the daughter in time for her leering boyfriend and the shocked dad to see her make an entrance in it for her date. The mom has a "that'll teach him" smile and it's a happy ending because that skirt is pretty easy access for the boyfriend.

I just couldn't believe that a Tide commercial would set up a father that wants to keep his daughter from dressing skimpy as someone to be foiled by the cleaning strength of Tide.

"...it's a happy ending because that skirt is pretty easy access for the boyfriend..."

well, the more calm way to percieve it is that it's a "happy ending"
because "meanie" Dad is thwarted, and the girl's preferred dress is saved....

STILL.... I appreciate the dislike of the spot...

Kids get enough encouragement and confirmation to be irresponsible
party animals... the don't need it from a cleaning detergent commercial.

That is kind of weird ..... But the commercial was made mostly for women and many commercials made for women make the man look like a dunce... It probably wasn't thought out out too well.

I just watched it on YOUTUBE... it goes by in, like, a lot of fast shots...
there's no boyfriend (in the clip I saw).... and the girl looks about
        25 years old.

Maybe I saw a different clip than Mego73?

I watched one that was about 40 seconds... it'd make sense that the edits were faster (as it was an edited version apparently?)... and, honestly,
the only female I got a really good look at was the "Mom"... after another
watch... yeah, it was the MOM that looked 25...and, actually, I hardly saw
the daughter's face.. it was covered by her hands... shot from the side
etc.---also, I saw it on my computer monitor

                Hmmmm....

It's been a longstanding tradition in sitcoms that dad is a moron, and never wins. I suspect the ad is just an extension of that.

I have not seen that one. I do not watch a whole lot of TV though either.

I thought this was going to be about the commercial with the animated babies "loading" their diapers down in the contest. Apparently their are some real winner commercials going on these days.

That's what I was thinking. I DO have two daughters (8 & 13) and I also understood the father's view.

Well Mike it is just more of the lets get rid of decency in america. Lack of morals. When someone isn't creative its easy to go for shock and sleaze in stead of clever and witty.

They don't make any Tide strong enough to clean the skirt after I got through with it.

I don't like that commercial either. My daughter is only 3, but I dread the teenage years.

It doesn't bother me as much as the curly-headed kid in the Toyota commercials that calls parents "lame".

Teenage Girls are a growing target demographic ( I fear the next Spidey film) Movies, Music etc.
So maybe it was a way of making it HIP* to buy TIDE.

                              * cool, phat, outrageous, totally fab, keen, *****in, . .whatever.

I thing" Lame" bothers me more than "Gay" . It's personal. Having to buy my first cane at age 30 sucked.
