The Guitar Hero Era is Over!

This totally blows my mind. I don't play this game but it is insanely popular! I think whoever decided this at Activision should probably be fired and it should be reversed:

Activision axing Guitar Hero and True Crime; Freestyle Games reportedly hit with layoffs [update] | Joystiq

"Due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing's Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011," Activision said in its financial statement.

I always thought that was a short-lived concept. Not surprised.

I could never understand the appeal of playing a game centering on a guitar and it doesn't even teach you how to really play one.

For the price of one of them prop game guitars you can buy a real one.

It's just stupid imo and was bound to eventually flounder

Rockband and Guitar Hero are actually fun games. Shame to see GH go. I blame activision for milking the property and cranking out too many games too close together.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

My company...which sells musical instruments, uses Guitar Hero as a way to get people interested in learning how to play guitar for real. We have actually found that even though guitar hero isn't like playing real guitar; individuals who are really good playing the game will generally pick up playing the real thing easier than someone who hasn't played or isn't as good.

The South Park spoof of Guitar Hero is LOL funny. Not so much because of the game but more as an example of how some rock stars live! If anyone has never seen it you really need to.

I wish that were true with me. I am pretty decent at Rock Band (except at expert level) and I can't play a real guitar to save my life. I was able to in my teens, although notes only, I never could play chords. But I took lessons a few years ago and couldn't pick it back up. So Rock Band is my only way to go.

Games like Guitar Hero have been really good in getting younger kids interested in rock music again, I've seen it plenty with relatives and my friend's kids. Several years ago the kids couldn't have cared less but now they're very intrigued and interested in the fact that I play guitar. And they think alot of these classic rock tunes are "cool" now, because they're part of the game so they come across as relevant instead of just "old man music", lol. They don't know that "Carry On Wayward Son" is over 30 years old, and that's just fine with me. I've played the game a few times and it was enjoyable, I think playing the game and playing real guitar are two completely different things and each have their own place. I'm sure if it goes away it'll resurface again.

What they needed was a contoller with "strings" that you could fret and strum so that as you got better at the game, you actually WERE learning the basics of a guitar. Ditto for the piano part of RB...

Bummer. I still play Guitar Hero: Van Halen from time to time. It was fun unlocking the classic version of the band and their old stage costumes, but I can't get five stars on "Spanish Fly" to save my life. But the games do teach kids about classic rock--my 12 year old niece loves BOC's "Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll," f.ex.

The era of Guitar Hero ended the moment Rock Band was released.

Isn't that what Rock Band 3 does?

I liked Guitar Hero, but once Rock Band came out, I started on that series instead. Guitar Hero World Tour was too little, too late, unfortunately.

I just hope this doesn't mean no Rock Band 4.
