I got it last week, just haven't watched it yet. Best Buy had the top line Sony without the 3D for $139.00 right before the holidays. I use it for netflix and you tube and like it a lot. I'm sure it will come back to that price soon if not lower. Bought a bunch that were decent prices.
Total Recall
A-Team
Inception
To name a few.It's not a doll it's an action figure.Comment

Since the price of blu-ray movies has lowered I would pick up a player and just buy br movies going forward.....the quality difference is very noticeable.Comment

On the other hand, I replaced my Curtis with a cheap Lennox Sound (who???) player, mostly because I could remote hack it to play any region disc, as well as PAL discs. Over 7 years later it's still going strong (although it was relegated to the kids' room several years ago). Go figure!
Those cheap Seiki (who???) Blu-ray players for around $50 have been tempting me as an extra player for the bedroom TV, but I've heard that they tend to run kind of hot, so I'm not sure if it's a good idea to get one. Anyone have any luck with these?Last edited by cjefferys; Jan 27, '11, 10:42 PM.Comment

just bought a bluray player (that is why we have more snow on the East Coast, hell froze over). Deck cost me only $138 (that was with shipping from AMazon.com)
I bought it because it can play blurays from anywhere in the world (allows you to switch to what region the bluray disc is from), convert PAL to ntsc on the fly and out of the box is dvd region free without inputing any sort of code (though I do have to type in a code to switch blu regions)
but I have no intention of ever replacing my dvd collection. In fact I still prefer them over blu. I will only be after blu if some film really gets that special treatment that the dvd version does not (like the Apocalypse Now box set and the upcoming Last Unicorn)Last edited by mazinz; Jan 28, '11, 1:56 AM."What motivated him to throw a puppy at the Hells Angels is currently unclear,"

I'm still waiting for the revival of VHS tapes...
Strange that Blu-Ray is getting so cheap now.
Either they want to push the masses into jumping on the bandwagon, or they have a new system already lined up, and are dumping Blu-Ray already.
Back in the 80s, a new system for tapes was pushed down our throats here, VCC 2000. Quality was excellent, and we had tons of tapes. Then they canceled the whole system....

The Six Million Dollar Man release is a perfect example that DVD's are still holding their own.
It should be marketed to "geeks" with high tech players (blue-ray).
Instead, it's released on DVD
That should tell you something about what companies think and not what they say.Last edited by Mikey; Jan 28, '11, 9:58 AM.Comment

TV shows are still more marketable for DVD. It seems that only high profile older shows like Star Trek, Twilight Zone and Space:1999 (in the UK, 1999 is higher profile, the USA benefited by just releasing it here) get blu ray releases so far.
I am still hoping that non HD blu rays of some TV shows will come out. Because of blu ray's large capacity (a dual layer blu ray is equal to about five and a half dual layered DVD's) a whole season of half hour shows could fit on one disc in standard definition. It would be a marketing problem though to make sure people know that while it's a blu ray, it's standard definition. You could categorize it as HCSD blu-ray (High capacity standard definition blu-ray). On some shows, such as the videotaped ones like All In The Family, there is no way to make those HD anyway.
In the case of The Six Million Dollar Man set, the masters utilized were mid 90's pre HD DigiBeta transfers which look fine for DVD but wouldn't work for HD blu ray. It makes me wonder if the film elements for SMDM still exist after that well publicized fire Universal had.Comment

Heh, my first DVD player was a Curtis, I bought it back in 2001 for $99, which was a really good price for a DVD player back then (at least in Canada). My father, his friend and my uncle bought one too. My father's friend's one caught fire (!!) a few months later. My father and uncle's crapped out within a year. Mine lasted maybe 1 1/2 years before it developed an annoying audio dropout issue. I'm glad you're having better luck with yours.Comment
