The only reason I watch it is to see if anyone died that I wasn't aware of. There's usually a few that I say, "Oh, didn't know they died".
Yeah, that's true. Now that I think of it that's the only reason I've ever had any interest in enduring it.

I agree on your description of it being a popularity contest. They left out Yvonne DeCarlo when she died (she was in The Ten Commandments!) and they snubbed Farrah when she died as well!
Yeah, and Farrah Fawcett was an actual member of the Academy, while Micheal Jackson (who was included) was not. Also, there was no mention of Brad Renfro, who starred in Apt Pupil with Ian McKellan and died a week before Heath Ledger.
The way I look at it, if you can't be equal in doling out the "honors", you probably shouldn't do it all.
I wasn't personally nuts about Gladiator, but that's always such a politically motivated and cheap move they do.
Yeah - the movie we liked best wasn't directed the best - makes a lot of sense.
Though it was a crazy year for Soderbergh - he directed two "contender" movies that year. "Traffic" (which he won for) and "Erin Brockovich" - so I think that swayed people into voting for a director/film split that year.
To be honest I personally enjoyed "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" best from the nominations that year.
