Oscar Nomination Predictions - Or WHY do I care?!

I don't even watch the show every year, but for some reason I always suck myself into trying to make predictions about the nominations and winners.

This year I think these 7 for sure:

The Social Network <= my guess for winner
    Black Swan
    Inception
    The King's Speech
    The Kids Are Alright
    True Grit
    The Fighter

    Then these seem likely:

    Another Year
    127 Hours

I have a feeling that Toy Story 3 is something they'd want to recognize, but the Best Feature Animation category makes me question if it will make it.

Barney's Version, Somewhere, Hereafter and Buried all seem like plausible surprise picks too - only because they need 10.

    What do you guys think?

I haven't seen a movie in the theatre since Superman Returns so I don't think i'm qualified to pick any current Oscars

I've seen two minutes of Black Swan, but they were the important two minutes.
        BEST. FILM. EVER!
Of all the souls I have encountered his was the most...human.

Ha - I'm totally not that far away from you! Apart from older movies at my local rep theatre I think the last movie I saw in it's original run was "The Expendables".

I love going to the movies. In fact, I see about 1 every week! The fact is, however, this year was so bad, I have trouble finding 10 movies from this year that I think are really that great!

As for what the Academy will pick, I think you have it covered. Some movies may get nods for a particular actor that might not best picture. 'The Town' might get a nomination along with critical favorite, "Winter's Bone". Dark horse nomination is 'Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World"- lots of Academy people liked it and it made good money. Other unlikely possibilities are - 'Get Low' and 'The Secret In Their Eyes' (definite for Best Foreign).
            WANTED - Solid-Boxed WGSH's, C.8 or better.

I've only seen what you have - but I'm more of a Kunis fan in that regard.

I would lay money right now on Portman winning for best actress though.

I only saw Iron Man 2 this year, so I hope it wins best picture.

Saw "The King's Speech" commercial the other day and it looks like the type of movie that makes the academy wet it's pants and the public less interested in the Oscars.

I love movies and try to see about 5 a week, I just don't have the cash or gumption to see new movies as much. I agree that this is kind of a flat year.

I think you've done a great job of filling out the other possible picks I forgot about!

I disagree about "Scott Pilgrim" though. Critics liked it, but it would be a very odd Oscar choice and it was actually a bit of a flop money-wise. Reported cost was $60 mil. and it didn't even take in that much world wide - so I think you're remembering that a little wrong.

I stopped caring about those self-absorbed back-patters years ago.
The only thing I tune in for is the "In Memoriam" clip and if I miss that I can still find it on you-tube.

The thing that drives me nuts about the "in Memoriam" montage is when the classless twits applaud for the people they recognize - how about total silence during the montage and then clap at the end?

Oh God, don't get me started on that sick "In Memoriam" popularity contest. I don't have the stomach to watch it. Actually - and I don't mean to rain on the parade of anyone who enjoys it - I have a really hard time watching any of the Oscars anymore. Whenever I hear someone say "Yeah, it won a bunch of Academy Awards" or "They were nominated for an Oscar", like it's this inarguable stamp of artistic excellence... I just kind of cringe.

The only reason I watch it is to see if anyone died that I wasn't aware of. There's usually a few that I say, "Oh, didn't know they died".

I agree on your description of it being a popularity contest. They left out Yvonne DeCarlo when she died (she was in The Ten Commandments!) and they snubbed Farrah when she died as well!

For some reason I can't help but get sucked into discussing and thinking about the nominations.

                              Maybe I just need help!

I did like a lot of the movies nominated last year, but that's not normally the case. This year I haven't even seen one of the most likely choices! I'm not routing for anything in particular - though it would be nice to see another Mike Leigh movie get nominated (he made Another Year) even though I haven't seen this movie yet, I just really like his movies.
