    What Makes Your City Different?

I have always appreciated the things that distinguish one place from another.

Days were that local radio and local TV were different from city to city. Department stores were different from city to city.

Well, here it is...Christmas Time again and the local (only to Oklahoma City) Christmas jingle is playing. This is something I have known my whole life and they play it every year. About the time I get sick of it for the umpteenth time in a row, it goes away until I fall in love with it all over again....

Now, just to let you know the impact it has had on us locals, here is Megan Mullally (from Will and Grace), on the Tonight Show, sandwich in between Jay Leno and Bob Newhart...singing the commercial.

My "city" is just a small hick town

We have 2 police officers that share 1 patrol car

We have no department stores and no fast food joints.

Our biggest excitement is when the occassional black bear decides to rumage through the garbage.

        That's my "city"

Yeah, but I guess what I was driving at was back in the day, New York City had Jean Shepard and no one outside of that listening area knew who he was. You actually had to go to New York City or be from there to know about his show.

Now, it seems like there is little difference from one area of the country to the other and I miss the days when things could just be a local thing.

I remember when I was 13 and first moved here to Oakland (for the first time), the first thing I noticed was the racial mixture. Coming from just outside Harlem in Washington Heights, it was mostly Blacks, Puerto Ricans and Dominicans. We had 3 white kids in our school, and 1 kid who was interacial (Japanese and white). And people usually, (though not always) stuck to their own kind. Here in Oakland, it was a whole different scene. Whites mixed w/ blacks, and Asians, and Mexicans. It was weird but in a cool way. Definitely took some getting used to.

I think that's what's different about my city.

Yes, Oakland is truly multi-racial...split down the middle...it could very well be the most diverse city in America....

"According to the 2006-2008 American Community Survey,[79] the racial composition of the city were 36.9% White (Non-Hispanic Whites: 25.4%), 29.8% Black or African American, 0.6% Native American, 15.6% Asian, 0.8% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander and 3.7% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos (of any race): make up 25.2% of the total population."

                            Ahhhh..yes.
Some day. I wanted to go this year to see The Church play the Opera house and see them be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame.
Australia is on my top 5 places to visit.
Instead this year I'm going to India. Should be fun but not on my top 10 list fer sure.

Our town has a Kris Kringle parade which is pretty cool. Dressed more like Father Christmas rather than a traditional U.S. Santa Claus since our area was orginially founded by German immigrants. Downtown has trees completely covered in white lights and since our town was founded in colonial american days....most of the area is decorated colonial christmas style.
