Know of any old-fashioned department stores still around?

I'd like to take my kids to a classic old department store - the kind with its own cafe & Santa. Does anyone know of any that are still around, particularly in Ohio? I'm originally from Philly, so I'm looking for a Wanamaker's or Harvest House atmosphere. I like what Ikea & Nordstrom are doing, but they're both pretty modern.

    Thanks!

I wish that weren't the case, but those days are gone until the pendulum swings back.

Someday, they might play the game by trying to be different than the competition instead of conforming to the model of trying to beat each other at their own game.

Until then, we have what we have and that is no different from Duluth to Dallas or Arlington (VA) to Anaheim.

Kinda' rude of Hector to not mention the Morlocks to you; they can easily ruin a Santa photo shoot.

Anymore, the closest you'll get is to go to a Bass Pro Shop. And that's sad when you think about it.

                WOW Hec......
That looks just like the Newfield’s I used to go to as a kid, come to think of it I think it was first called 5 and dime then Woolworths, I can still see the AJ Outfits stacked in neat rows right next to the Hot Wheels display case.

I would pick up my comics from a little mom and pop across the street and then have a burger and chocolate soda at the counter....... Good times!

We still have one Kmart left in Waterville Maine. There's also another one down in Newington New Hampshire.

In Kingston, Ontario, Canada, where I went to university, there was still one last old-school department store left. It even had an old guy operating the elevator still.

When I was there in the spring, they were tearing down the building.

                      Big Box retailers have won.

Growing up in Michigan, I always looked forward to our annual trip to Hudsons in Detroit. It was 25 stories of pure shopping heaven. Even in it's decline in the late 70's and early 80's, it was still awe-inspiring.

We have a local chain of stores called Boscovs. The owner and founder is Albert Boscov. They are your old fashion department store. They used to have their own cafe, but closed that many years ago. They do get a Santa for a few days at Christmas time. And, they have a toy section!

Wow, I didn't know Boscovs was still open.

The one by me closed down about 10 years ago and I assumed they all closed.

                            It was huge.

                            Good store for toys ...

Hmm. I hadn't thought of them. I hit the one in Plymouth Meeting PA a few years ago, but not at Xmas.
