If you saw this for the first time...

Doing some research here for an art teacher/friend of mine. If you saw this image for the first time, would you say it was CGI created art or assume it was a photo of a sculpture?

The shine/reflection on the gold part looks a bit CGI to me. Something looks a bit "unnatural" about the "lines" of the reflection with the amount of light yet the the matte look. of the gold part itself.

Real with photo enhancements....if that's CGI that's a great job.

While I don't consider myself an expert, I deal with CGIs on a daily basis. Not just with Photoshop and Illustrator, but Maya, ZBrush, C4D, and AfterEffects.

First off, when I get these sort of questions, I generally ask for a larger and higher resolution image. If the OP has one, would I be able to look at it, please?

At first glance I would have to say it is a real object, but some of the image compression artifacts and the way the base's shadow falls causes me to raise an eyebrow. If it's a completely digital object someone needs to give the artist a refresher course in lighting a digital scene, possibly even a course in rendering software (I recommend Renderman). And of course, it could be a real object with some digital manipulation.

The XKCD webcomic also chimes in:

Looking at the base, i'd say it was a photo.

I thought it was a photo.

Looks like a portfolio picture. It has a neutral background well lit etc.

Bronze embedding in cement Ive seen people do that . If youre willing to risk wrist injury* you can shine freshly casted bronze to that sort of shine .

                  ( grinders, air tools etc)

remeber sculptors have been smoothing things out by hand for thousands of years . Thsi could just be a piece with nice neat detailing. And we are taught how to take good well lit pictures of our work.

Sucks you have to ask though . . . .

To me it looks like real objects that have been moved around on the computer. Some of the shadows look inconsistent.

Yeah - the sculpture looks real to me. The background gradient and shadow on the ground looks photoshopped though.

Do we get to find out the answer?

A friend of mine is an art teacher. He showed this exact photo as part of a powerpoint presentation to his class. It is a real life sculpture: Brancusi's Bird in Space.

A student raised his hand right away and asked: "Is that a sculpture?"

He said, "I'll give you 2 hints: it's not a painting and it's made of bronze".

I suggested to him maybe the student didn't think it was real. I told I him at first glance it looked to me like it was a CGI. I asked him to check with the student and see if that was their perception too. I'm waiting to see if he did. In this day and age I think we kind of expect things to be CGI now. The colors, lighting , etc. to my eye would suggest CGI.
