Just out of curiosity I brought this into photoshop - quickly cut out the sculpture - slapped a new gradient on the background and added the shadow. Didn't really do anything special or time consuming - and this is what I got:

First glance at the picture, it looks like a photo of a real object.
First glance at Brazoo's version above.. that is more realer than the realest real

OK, so what do I know then. That reflection on the piece just didn't look real to me and it is! Go figure.
        It's all good!

I remeber watching MVP 2 ( Most Vertical Primate) with some kids at work . Another councelor said the Chimp on a skateboard must be CGI it looks too good. Then we watched the 30 minute Tony Hawk feature showing them training the chimp.

I know FX guys that have been insulted by having thier work mistaken for CGI.

Ha! Well - I was just trying to confirm if the background and shadow on the ground could have been added after the photo was taken using photoshop - and I think they might have been. Mine's not perfect - I did it in seconds - and it's still pretty close to the original - in my opinion.

            Anyway - I think that's what's throwing people off.

I think most people assume any photo of a shiney metal object is CGI

There's just something about shiney metal objects that CGI artists are very attracted too (see Star Wars prequels)

So true! I think maybe because CGI shiny surfaces don't reflect the camera shooting the shot? Or maybe it is just a fetish CGI artists have.
