now if they were to send a large number of people like a couple transports of some kind ... I could see a better chance of it getting of the ground ... something that would allow some kind of growth in population etc. Gives them a feeling of creating something new, but sending just a couple ... naw, wouldn't work ... they'd kill themselves out of lack of anything to do

It sounds to me like a big pr stunt as well. I would think they would send robots with sensors on them first and test it over time to see if a human being could live there for long duration rather than just take a couple of volunteers.

I also would think that the selection process would become extreme. They would have to pick a few people with no families and who would not break psychologically. They literally would have to perform psychological experiments right here over a few years to see who would crack over time.

My thinking is they would all succumb to cabin fever. To be buried in an artificial environment forever? How could they even exercise? I think the whole concept is flawed. And what about medical attention as they get older or if they get sick that requires surgery? They could easily die very young. I say send robots.

Wonder if NASA would allow the astronaut to bring huge boxes filled with porn ?

Wasn't that like what, 10 outer limit episodes?

As Generic says it would be a new nationality but that would only be at first. The gravity on Mars is different and as time goes on, if people live there, they will start to change physically. As generations go by they will start to evolve differently. Some people will change to the point where they could no longer return to Earth and walk around here like normal. I often think Venus would be better if only they could cool the planet down where people could live on it. Veuns is the same size as Earth it's just too hot to live on.
I was going to say the same thing.....you beat me to it

Well considering we all came from Mars in the first place after we destroyed the environment..........

You can't land on that VERY FAR AWAY gas giant...not only are the winds over 500 miles per hour (that's nothing, Neptune is over 1500 mph)...but the gravity will crush you in a nano-second.

                        Mars is so much safer...

That way of thinking worked out pretty good for George Taylor...

I don't understand why NASA has not to the best of my knowledge focused on some type of measurement tool to find out if green house emissions are really affecting our planet or not instead of looking at colonizing Mars. Take the science and make sure our planet is protected from random Asteroid strikes which could wipe us out or looking at greenhouse emissions to determine whether or not it really is affecting us or is going to continue as some big political debate.
