I'm amazed that in Hell's Kitchen out of the 10,000 people who apply they always seem to pick the 16 dumbest.

I'm a big fan of Gordon Ramsey. He mostly yells at people who are being stupid, especially on Kitchen Nightmares. When the restaurant owners get it right, he tends to be incredibly generous. He also gives compliments to those who deserve them. I also watched Master Chef, and he must have told the producers to make someone else the a**hole. That's the only reason I can see for that snotty bald guy.Hey! Where's the waiter with the water for my daughter?

I like Ramsay- I've read his bio and he had a fairly tough upbringing, cooking was his way out of it. He was at one time a professional soccer player, but then went into cooking. On the Master-Chef show he was more mentorish, less critical. If something is good or done right, he does give the cook credit. That happens on Hell's Kitchen as well, but gets overshadowed by the name-calling.
I would note that the chef who killed himself last week had the usual bad resteraunt, but I thought it had been turned around to some extent. they did do a followup show where ramsay went back there, praised the guy for keeping things in order, gave the owner a civic award for his resteraunt, and Ramsay actually took some of his food along because it was good. I'm guessing there were other demons driving this fella other than being on Kitchen Nightmares.Comment

I think that's for entertainment value. If everyone was a talented and acted normal, the show would be boring. Who would Gordon yell at? My brother met the winner from 2008 Christina Machamer. She is no longer a chef but a server. I thought that was odd.Comment

I've mentioned that to my wife as well...how can you have any type of taste pallet when it's been dulled by all that tobacco intake? Plus have none of these goofs even seen previous shows? They say & do the stupidest things, almost as if they want to get their heads handed to them!

The stress at some of the high end restaurants has to be unbelievable. Chefs want every entree cooked and ready at the same time, cooked to perfection, long hours, etc.
Anyone notice that just about every contestant on Hell's Kitchen appears to be a heavy smoker and drinker? It seems like that's all they do when they go back to their dorms.
Food needs to consistently sent out right cooked right. Food that is not cooked or prepared right can get people sick....as a chef you have to be aware of that......
You wouldn't believe how bad and how disgusting some cooks are in handling food. Customers are paying for quality meals not to get sick.
The stress is Unbelievable and Why I left the Biz i was very close to having a heart attack long hours hot kitchens very little sleep. Most of the Chefs I know smoke and drink when you get off out around 11:pm you need to let off stress and many drink to blow steam....
I use to Power walk to blow steam when I got out of work. I use to work on 42nd street and walked all the way down to Delancey street under an hour just to rid myself of the days stress.......Comment

Something I always wondered about his Kitchen Nightmares shows ...
Wouldn't you think showing restaurants dirty and unkept would make people NOT want to come EVEN AFTER his makeover ?
I certainly wouldn't go to any of those dumps.
I figure 99% of them are back the way they were as soon as he leaves.
The only reason they want to be on the show is for the free makeover.Comment

I like the British version of Nightmares. It's a lot more constructive, with less screaming and better advice. I'm guessing that the producers of Hell's Kitchen and the US Nightmares have made it clear to Gordon that they're paying him to be a jerk. I got bored with those shows for that reason.Comment

The chef that killed himself was on the show the first season 3 years ago in 2007, after Ramsay left the resturant, the buisness got better, he won a cooking competion in N.J. and other chefs from around the area were regulars at his place which is one of the biggest compliments a chef can get from his peers.
Ramsay stays at each location for a full week watching and helping from open to close everyday and Fox picks the most stressful 45 minutes from that to show on t.v.
Back when I was young the last thing I wanted to do was be involved in my family buisness in anyway so I started cooking since I loved to do it and wanted to be a chef, I finally got to work under a couple different chefs and eventually became the evening dinner chef at a resort in the mountains and I can remember more than one night when it looked like an episode of Hell's Kitchen.
The other contestant was from Hell's Kitchen and was on the show a couple years before her death, I imagine neither were related to anything Ramsay did.
I do know of one Hell's Kitchen contestant that was no where close to being a chef, She left her Waffle House cooking job to be on the show but he was so impressed with her that he personally sent her to cullinary school when she got booted from the show.
There was another young chef from the British Kitchen Nightmares that he found local in Italy and brought her into a troubled place there to help it out. When it closed he paid to move her to London to work in his resturant.
He can surely be an a** and many nights watching the show I thought, well I believe I would've popped him in the mouth just then and walked out.ChadComment

It is interesting about the cigarette comment because it came up as an issue on Hell's Kitchen just this week. Ramsay basically asked his contestants if they would stop smoking for a few days and allow their taste buds to develop and not let the cigarettes dull the sense of taste in the food they were cooking. A few did but a few others just said they couldn't do it...especially given the stress of being on the show."The farther we go, the more the ultimate explanation recedes from us, and all we have left is faith."
