When the 89' Batman Movie came out ...
It was like sorta at the End of The "Tough Guy" Action Movies, as we Knew them. Hollywood Just sorta went a Different Direction for the Most part .
JMO ..., But I sorta Agree with him in Parts ....... The Original Knight ..., Often Imitated, However Never Duplicated. The 1st Knight in Customs.
always trading for Hot Toys Figures .Comment

I cant blast a man for speaking his mind. Regardless of whatever he might have done in the past to amass that Physique of his let's remember that he gave us First Blood , which in my opinion is one of my top 5 flicks of all time.WHEREVER YOU ARE IS WHERE YOU ARE AT

Take Rocky away from Stallone and he's Van Damme. Ok, maybe not that bad, but close. The guy has made way more lousy movies than good ones. Rocky was a special movie (the first one) and all the accolades Stallone received were well worth it. From then on it was downhill......Comment

HA! That's an amazing and insane perspective - that I guess only HE could have. Personally I don't even think of "Batman" as an action movie.
I think the general trend in the 90s was moving away from big hair and big muscles. Wrestling and big hair rock were just less cool - and there are probably TONS of factors that play into why that happened.
I'm not even too sure if Stallone's career lull follows that trend. I think his taste and luck just got real crappy for a while.Comment

Stallone is making excuses and I feel being a bit of a cry-baby here. Having real muscles and working out does not = acting ability. As film after film gets released people can tell when someone is a one-trick-pony. His talent is limited to certain types of roles and he has made bad choices in the films he has made. He was in Judge Dredd. That was his brush with a comic book icon. It didn't come out well or take off like he hoped but that's how it goes.
All era's come to an end. Can we blame the end of The Western era of film on the release of The French Connection in the 1970's? You can only do Rocky so many times. He had a chance to graduate to the big time when he did Copland but he squandered it. Take for example TV actor Tony Danza. He wound up playing a lawyer on The Practice to rave reviews. People only thought he could play Banta from TAXI. Could you ever see Stallone playing such a role?
Blaming Batman didn't work for William Shatner either. He stated that the release of Batman in 1989 was what killed Star Trek 5 's chances of being a blockbuster that summer. It was very obvious the film had numerous problems and was not as entertaining as other ST films.
Arnold, Stallone, and Van Damme are not good actors. In fact it's stretch to even call them actors. They are lucky to have had the careers they did with the few good films they made. Bottom line is: if you make good movies, people will pay to see them. Your success does not depend on your muscles-real or fake. That's why when I read this I concluded Stallone was as dumb as he looks.Last edited by johnmiic; Jul 23, '10, 4:03 PM.Comment

yeah but say what you want about those actors but they still make decent movies worth watching and are kind of fun, is no one looking forward to Stallone's action flick coming out soon? I know I am"Time to nut up or shut up"-Tallahassee

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...Comment

I will nit-pick with you a little about Schwarzenegger's and Stallone's acting abilities. They both have a film charisma that a lot of actors try to and can't achieve. In the correct roles they're very serviceable - they just don't have a lot of range. off the top of my head John Wayne is a good example of what I'm kind of comparing them too.
With Stallone specifically - I think his movies became more about style than substance. For example - director Martin Brest claims that when Stallone was involved in "Beverly Hills Cop" he was obsessed with changing Axle Folly's name to Cobra - because he thought a cop named Cobra would really be popular. He famously left "Beverly Hills Cop" for other projects, and a couple of years later he made "Cobra" which was one of his worst (and worst received movies). Big muscles, sunglasses, guns and a toothpick are not a character - so it doesn't matter how good the acting is at that point - to me anyway.
For the record I thought he was actually really great in "Rocky Balboa", and I thought "Rambo" was a pretty awesome action movie.Comment
