Joan Jett was the female vocalist in the early eighties.
This is my assesment based on the times I heard "I love rock n roll" and "Crimson and clover" in the pool hall.

I love heart but to me they were rockers in the 70's but once the 80's hit .. they turned pop-ish
I agree on that. I think PB and Joan Jett take the top billing as "rockers," but don't forget Chrissie Hynde. Not necessarily hard-rock, but still rock.
        It's all good!

You beat me to the punch.

Ann Wilson is a goddess...end of story.

I also love Pat Benatar too.

            Love Chrissie Hynde as well.

I was never into Joan Jett...while her voice was indeed harsher and raspier...she did not hold a candle to either Wilson or Benatar's voice.

One hit? There were more than that, at least eight that were "Top 40" (aka "hits"):

                "I Love Rock and Roll"
                "Crimson and Clover"
                "Do You Wanna Touch"
                "Everyday People"
                "Light of Day"
"I Hate Myself For Loving You"
                "Little Liar"
                "Dirty Deeds"

It's the "radio programmers" that forget the others and only program ILRR.. But, around here, Benatar's in the same boat: They play "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and that's about it...

Come on...Benatar's "Love Is a Battlefield", "Hit Me with Your Best Shot", "We Belong" and "Heartbreaker"...were all over the radio during the 80s...come on now.

Besides, her overall resume is more impressive than Jett's:

Two RIAA-certified Multi-Platinum albums, five RIAA-certified Platinum albums, three RIAA-certified Gold albums and 19 Top 40 singles (10 more than Jett).

Personal choice aside...compare their album sales charts...Pat Benatar (four time Grammy winner) easily outsold Joan Jett.

Besides...record sales are irrelevant...if you like Joan Jett more...fine...I think that's great...

But for me...I love Pat Benatar more...simple as that...although "I Love Rock and Roll" is one of my all time favorites...I'll give you that...

I feel that Benatar's "Love Is a Battlefield" & "We Belong" are her weakest songs. Way overplayed on the radio and in music videos. Perhaps too pop-ish. Shadows of the Night, Sex as a Weapon and Invincible in the 80's were great songs. "Looking for a Stranger" is an unusual, funky song, often overlooked.

I never said that Pat wasn't widely played on the radio back then, I was talking about "now"... I also didn't say she didn't have many hits... All I was getting at is "Mikey01" more or less referred to Joan as a "one hit wonder", I was just setting the record straight... And as far as my saying they only play like one song (maybe two) by Pat around here on a regular basis (now) isn't made up... On the station where the bulk of their programming is 80s stuff, they cut down the "hit lists" of almost everyone and continually play the same one or two songs by them and ignore the rest of their stuff... Pat is no exception to them doing that... I haven't listened to that station in a few years, maybe they changed it up a little, but I doubt it...

And I agree with your comment that in the end, record sales don't really "count" as far as if an artist is good or not... I'm sure almost everyone on here could name someone they like and people'd be like "Who?"

BTW: Pat and Joan did/do shows together... They came around here a couple times in the last few years...

LITA FORD has alweays been a useless pig when it came to music
or anything related, EXCEPT regarding her OUT FOR BLOOD/DANCING
ON THE EDGE period.... which, ironically, most mainstreamers don't know about anyway.

PAT BENETAR has a nice collection of pop songs..... I'll give her that.

JOAN JETT has the coolest voice of any mainstream rock chick
and is "THE" icon of hard rock chicks that has endured into 2010....
on reason that JOAN does so well, is that her songwriting momentum
was buoyed by many others.... which I'm totally at ease with.

Incidentally "I HATE MYSELF FOR LOVING YOU" and "CRIMSON & CLOVER" were huge hits for JOAN that I remember doing well as they came out...
and Joan's success with BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN'S LIGHT OF DAY wasn't too shabby either.
