I can't believe how many people here think this is real.

Every person in the US know's Jay's routine.

The people that answer stupidly know they're going to be put on TV - that's why they do it.

No, Jay's show is not that popular that every person would know Jay's routine.

Most of those people shown in these bits do not know the answers. Heck, my son knew more than my wife on those 4th of July questions. People are not as engaged in learning anymore. Sad but true.

Or they could be a "heavily talented" "art-maker" who thinks they deserve
the "title" or "label"...and that range is part of what defines my point.

Labels are a bit subjective, but the there are some who have earned them more than others.. like a Professor.

A "chef" is an official title either gained from certification or, at least
a more focused set of classifications--- while "artist" is not as far as I know.

Artist is an "official" title too, gained in various ways. Degrees and Doctorates are acquired in Fine Arts, Graphic Arts, Graphic Design, etc. However, the titles would be different than just "Artist". Though they have earned the right to label themselves as just plain "Artist" as well.

I wouldn't get too upset about it. People sometimes do get brain-farts...

I'd be willing to bet that Leno probably interviewed dozens of people before he got the wrong answers he was looking for.

A Canadian comedian did the same thing a few years back. In order to get laughs he only kept the wrong answers. He's a fast talker, and intentionally confuses. Watch him when he talks about "Jean Poutine" Canada's supposed Prime Minister.

One of my good friends from way back (who is now a PhD) used to teach Junior High History.

Any time his Students would ask, "Coach Craig, why do we need to know this stuff?", his patent answer would be, "So you don't look like an idiot on The Tonight Show.".

They seemed to get that.

I've attended both universities and junior college...and let me tell you...sometimes the junior college instructors are actually better teachers than some of the overrated professors at universities.

Actually that joke is pretty insightfully on the money AFAIC...I don't
have huge expectations for people when it comes to "basic historical facts"---
other stuff like "being a good person", yeah I'm concerned,
but not knowing stuff about our country isn't gonna bother me.
