It makes one whatever YOU think he or she is, Hue. What I stated is MY opinion, based on 25 years as a professional artist in the same business as the people we're referencing. I'm NOT saying my opinion or my thoughts are better or even more valid than yours or anyone else's, for that matter. Take what you like from what I said, and leave the rest.
SC
not trying to nullify you (or anyone else)... add to that, that I can RELATE
to what a guy like Lee brings to the table... well, it doesn't take much to get
me going on a tear with "The Man"'s value.
Still...it's notable to repeat that originally, I wasn't keying in on that part of
the thread as brazoo noticed/noted."No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. "An artist is a person engaged in one or more of any of a broad spectrum of activities related to creating art, practicing the arts and/or demonstrating an art."
That brings up the age old question: "WHAT is art?"
As subjective as the product is, I would believe the producer would be just as subjective. In otherwords, who you consider an artist may differ as to who I consider an artist.
I consider myself an artist, in that I'm a fairly confident illustrator, graphic designer and writer. I am lucky that I have in the past been able to be considered a "professional." I do not practice my art often anymore due to personal reasons, but does that make me less of an artist?
I have seen on this forum many whose talents amaze me everyday. I consider them artists whether or not they consider themselves to be such.
I see professional "artists" everyday, on my TV or in my comic books who I have trouble finding the "art" in what they produced. They are hacks. But someone paid them to produce an object of art, and are considered artists by them. To each their own I suppose.
As fair as artists I favor, I must say my tastes tend to be all over the place. I respect folks who take a chance on their art, those that blaze the trails, and those that draw real nice-like
Here's my list in no order:
Amanda Palmer (Musician)
Shepard Fairey (Urban Artist)
Matt Doughty (Toy Maker)
Amanda Connor (Comics)
Jeff Smith (Comics)
Bany J (Toy Maker & Designer)
Madonna (Musician)
Alex Saviuk (Comics)
Stuart Immonen (Comics)
Terry Moore (Comics)
Gary Frank (Comics)
Wayne Boring (Comics)
Eduardo Barreto (comics)
Those are off the top of my head. I know I left out a whole slew, but I'm drawing a blank here.Last edited by LadyZod; Jun 25, '10, 4:08 AM.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Peter Bagge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One of many who I've never heard of... but after checking out his wiki
am quite impressed by his cred."No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. Walt Disney: Sandy, I totally understand what you're saying, but I truly think he was a guy with a lot of vision. He really understood quality and thought of things in new ways - even if we just want to discount him as a producer, he did help build a medium. I'm not sure that makes him an artist, but I can't discount the idea totally in my mind. You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...Comment

Stan Lee, is a guy who had some great ideas, who HIRED artists to build his empire and make him a fortune. I've met him several times and tried to work with him... He's inept at best. Maybe, back in the 60's he had a niche and discovered some great talent... Now, he's nothing more than an old fool, who has ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT THE HELL HE'S DOING. In my humble opinion, without guys like Ditko, Romita, Buscema, Kirby, Byrne, etc... There IS NO MARVEL.
The Comics Journal (forgot the issue number) Has an amazing eye opening interview with Jack Kirby who was very angry and bitter about Stan and how he made up stories about how he created the characters.
I always found it funny how after Kirby left Marvel in the early 70's Stan stopped writing and creating. While kirby continued to create non-stop....also when kirby came back he wrote most of his stories and did not team up with Stan.Comment

To be honest my favorite creative people have always been the ones who express joy or fun in some way. For me great comics have this way of expressing youthful exuberance if only by accident.Comment
