Yeah - I also think Stan Lee was more of a hands-on editor than an artist, personally.

Do you want visual artists or do filmmakers, musicians etc. count?

Hue, you can put what ever label you want, on anyone you want, but I draw, I sculpt, I paint, I write, I shoot photography and make films. I'm an artist. Stan Lee, is a guy who had some great ideas, who HIRED artists to build his empire and make him a fortune. I've met him several times and tried to work with him... He's inept at best. Maybe, back in the 60's he had a niche and discovered some great talent... Now, he's nothing more than an old fool, who has ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT THE HELL HE'S DOING. In my humble opinion, without guys like Ditko, Romita, Buscema, Kirby, Byrne, etc... There IS NO MARVEL.

Walt Disney-- Same thing. Guy with big ideas and a lot of money, at the right place at the right time, who HIRED phenomenal artists like Ward Kimball, John De Cuir, Marc Davis and Blaine Gibson (too name just a few) to design and make everything, while HE took all the credit. Call it what you want or put whatever spin, opinion, whatever you want on it, it still is what it is. All this stuff is on line if you look for it. I have known some of these artists personally, and the stories they tell about how their ideas and artwork were stolen, will curl your eyebrows.

I'm just very sensitive about this subject. The word "artist" holds more meaning for me than most...

                Rant off.

I think maybe huedell was answering me and not defending Lee? Could be wrong.

Stan Lee: a decent editor and a fantastic spokesman/marketer with most incredible luck and timing. He just happened (through nepotism, actually) to have access to some of the best talent in the field because the market was in a nose dive. Slapped his name on as writer and overwrote dialog on top of everything like crazy. Invented the term "the Marvel Method" which in any other form of publishing is called being an editor.

Walt Disney: Sandy, I totally understand what you're saying, but I truly think he was a guy with a lot of vision. He really understood quality and thought of things in new ways - even if we just want to discount him as a producer, he did help build a medium. I'm not sure that makes him an artist, but I can't discount the idea totally in my mind.

Like Lee, was a very effective figurehead who took credit for everything for sure. He screwed people, used artists and robbed them of credit - he was petty and cruel in a lot of ways.

I tend to think of Lee as being a little self deluded more than cruel, but he just contributed to a process, he didn't really invent anything. Disney strove to do new things - again, I'm not saying that makes him an artist, but unlike Lee I do think he had a vision no one else had.

Ub Iwerks - the man who created Mickey Mouse.

When an old friend came back from northern China he brought me home a small bottle of three penis wine. I shared it at a barbecue a few months later with a ton of people.

I probably could have happily gone through my whole life without ever hearing of 3 penis wine. Thanks Bill!

No, you're right...but, on that related note, I'll mention that I think thrashing
Lee's role in the "arts" is pretty unattractive.

"Idea guys" are okay in my book and not worth making out to be inferior
to anyone... I particularly tip my hat to a guy like Lee who has had his
mouth/brain in a lot of cool ideas.

Stan Lee: I don't know if an opportunist is an artist. Creative yes, artist is streching it for me.

JACK KIRBY: A well of amazing talent that is still influencing people today!~ Like the Impressionists his talent is still reverberating through the arts.

WILL EISNER: Another great artist with an abilty to express emotion, story, and ideas. I found him to be inspiring in just his presence.

FRANK MILLER: Reading his stories can still make my heart beat faster. Not too shaby too move someon on an emotional level like that. The Miller/Janson Daredevils still awaken the kid inside me.

Alphonso Mucha: Art Noveu master. His paintings of the Slav Epic are beyond inspiring.

Michelangelo: Dude rocked it old school! eh..hem. One of my favorite painters and sculpter.

Big fan of : Lou Fine, Bill Everett, Dave Stevens, Ditko, Mike Mignola, Bob Powell, Bruce Timm, Hernandez Bros, Dave Simm, Basil Wolverton, Jim Steranko, Osamu Tezuka, Hokusai, Van Gough,
