The Geek Squad is coming to help me w/ my new PC today!

    At last!

Ok, I got a new Dell PC (for Christmas). I didn't really need it, but it was a nice surprise. After some failed attempts to get people I know to help me w/ my file transfer, I enlisted the help of The Geek Squad, who will be here shortly. I guess this is good, but I've had this PC for 8 years, and change is tough for me. The new one has Windows 7 and I have Windows XP on this one. The new one has all kinds of memory and a 20" flatscreen. The new one doesn't have floppy, though, but does have a CD/DVD burner. (I still have stuff on floppy). Oh well. It's bitterseet, I guess. I'm gonna miss this PC. Goodbye old Dell, it's been fun.

I ended up transferring all my floppies to one USB thumb drive. Turns out half the crap I didn't need anymore.

As a former Circuit City employee, I find the cost for a professional file transfer to be alarmingly high. almost twice as much as I or anybody I know would charge for the same service.

but I also understand that not everybody can do it themselves. Still, I understand the importance of needing one's files saved. I recently had to upgrade my system as well, and I invested in a portable Hard Drive, as well as a portable USB Disk drive in order to do it. So I probably spent just as much as I would've to just have everything sent over to Best Buy to have them do it.

but I do like having the backup HD.

Personally I would have paid them to take the hard drive out of the old system and put it in the new Dell as a secondary; they charge less than a file transfer and it serves the same purpose.

It suffers from vendor compatibility, like most new OS releases. Given a year or two for software and hardware vendors to write compliant code and drivers it should be fine. Overall there are some really cool usability features, but I would not want it as my only computer at this point; maybe in another year.

Well, it's up. I'm not sure I like it though. I guess I'll just have to get used to it.

This sucks!! It won't play CDs or DVDs. And w/ all this memory, it won't play some of the sounds I set the old PC to play, b/c the files are too big? AAARRGGHH. I may have to reconnect the old one.

Did you open windows media player?Click on options in library to see if it will rip a cd to the library and maybe play from there.

My housemate got it working, (she has Windows 7). Sigh. I hate change. It may be awhile before I can handle this. I had the old PC for 8 years.
