    IMO, you're right...

I know 2001 is supposed to be this iconic classic movie but the only part I like is the beginning because it reminds me of Planet of the Apes and I like the Also Sprach Zarathusta (or however you spell it. I don't feel like googling it) music. In fact, they used that for the Mego POTA commercials!!!
After that I fall asleep...EVERY TIME!

"2001" might be my favorite film. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind - I'm just saying.

"Blade Runner" might be the best visually designed movie of all time - and probably one of film's greatest technical achievements, but the script can eat a fart.

And you're entitled to that... I'm sure people would think some of what I like is "boring" or whatever too...

Yes, it's a case of the "look" outweighing the story...

there are currently 3-4 WOZ projects being made. some of them based on other books in the series.
Scarlet was not a remake of GWTW it was A sequel, and a very weak one at that.
Casablanca and GWTW are 2 that should never be remade and at least int eh case of GWTW probably never will be.
Oz is one of those movies that does not really get remade. just different interpretations and or prequel/sequels.
the Tin Man mini series was not really a remake or even reimagining. it was "based" on the novels by Baum -and took place many many years after the time of Dorothy
                .
the one movie that will never be remade - actually series - is Star Wars. Lucas would never allow it

I don't know...My guess is that STAR WARS is the type of franchise that is
so immensely popular that long after Lucas is dead and the copyrights are
up for grabs to the highest bidder, that it has a better chance of being
remade than a lot of other less valuable franchsies.

                    Just got cancelled I think.

I hope they never remake Alien. Its just too cool and classic. Its dark shots and creepy atmosphere is part of what is great about it.

Spielberg said in an interview that it was a blessing the mechanical shark didn't work, because it forced him to use fewer shots of it, which increased the suspense. He also stated that if there had been CGI at the time he would have made liberal use of it, and admitted this would have made for a weaker film. (He's said similar things about Raiders of the Lost Ark.) You'd think if he was so self-aware about his lack of cinematic discipline, he'd be able to correct course, but... I guess he's too much of a born showman. (This may help explain the last 3 Star Wars movies, too...) I think they get too dazzled with the toys in their toolbox.

Are you guys referring to the original with the awful voice-over narration? I actually thought the script and story and "tears-in-rain" stuff was pretty eloquent for an action movie.

That's true, he's too busy "remaking" them himself... Change a line here, alter Darth's history there, before you know they'll be new films...

All too iconic to try and repeat. Their as famous for what they are as when they were made.

I wish Wizard of Oz was one, but there will soon be a remake, or reimagining) of it. Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Gone With the Wind, The Godfather, just to name a few that I don't think anyone would touch. Though I do remember the rumors a few years back that J-Lo and Ben affleck were circling a Casablanca remake. I remember the SNL joke, for those people who loved the original, but wished it had sucked. Pretty funny.

My roommate's got the full DVD box set from a year or two ago, so I believe I've seen every single version now. Even that 60 min. thing made from out takes.

None of the versions were very compelling to me script-wise. As a sci-fi movie I don't think the theme of questioning what makes us human is ever fully realized and the film noir detective/love story just seems paint-by-number job to me. The action only works if we have a stake in the outcome of the characters and I don't in this movie.

Deckard is a complete enigma, he doesn't want to hunt replicants and we don't know why, then he changes his mind and we don't know why. They're using a standard convention of detective film noir, to give the hero some kind of mysterious backstory, but because the character is so lifeless and underwritten I never get an idea of what his backstory meant to him - so he ends up meaning nothing to me too.

The idea of making him a replicant (in at least one of the versions) doesn't improve things for me either. I get the idea that they're playing with the notion that Deckard is the human with no soul, and Roy is a replicant with a soul - but the movie isn't consistent with that, so it just seems a little wishy-washy. It's not surprising to me that it could have gone either way with Dekard being a replicant depending on the editing, because Dekard doesn't seem like a fully rendered character in the first place to me.

Dekard's motives are unclear and his quest is unmemorable because I'm not along for the ride. The movie looks like a detective story, but in a real detective story the audience is trying to figure things out with the hero. We see Dekard kind of doing some detective work - it kind of seems like there's a puzzle going on, but the audience never gets to play with the pieces.

I agree with you that the narration is awkward in the original version, but at least it sort of works as a cheat-sheet for getting inside Dekard's head a bit. Even though I don't like it, I can see why it was added.

There are a few clever lines, and I really do think it's one of the most beautiful films ever made - which is why I keep suffering through it - but overall, meh.
