    ok.. Birthday rant

I totally hate my mood this week. as some of you know my 40th B-day was Tuesday, aside from my wife taking me out to dinner and a card from my mom and grandmother, I got nothing. My in-laws sent card late, they forgot..
now my friend turned 40 on the day after and they're having a big surprise party Saturday, my friends are all talking about getting gifts for him etc...

I know i'm being selfish for not getting anything. heck I didn't get a cake..

Am I totally overreacting? I should just suck it up and stop being materialistic?

Sorry, Dude. I'd be disappointed, too.

I've had the same thing happen over the years and I came to the conclusion that I just don't put out any vibes that kind of stuff is important to me.

Give them the benefit of the doubt and don't let it get you down on them.

I don't think you are overreacting, 40th is a big birthday, and I'm sorry you didn't even get a cake... that sucks. Birthdays are the only time of the year I really look forward to lots of special attention...lucky for me I get it more often than that but if I don't get it on my Birthday I get upset.

I think saildog might have hit the nail on the head. I'm not big on a lot of birthday attention myself. My family gets together sometime around my birthday - the kiddies make handmade cards - my girlfriend takes me out for dinner - that weekend I'll probably go out with friends and drink a little too much. It's not terribly exciting, but it's what I like.

          Anyway, happy birthday!

I always hated the disappointment of birthdays. Not that I expected alot, but because people felt obligated. So I have Hobbit birthdays now, and have ever since I turned 33 (which is when a Hobbit comes of age).

On my birthday, I give presents (and don't accept any). It was my solution to the birthday disappointment. (thanks JRR Tolkien!)

If it makes you feel any better i have not had a present for my birthday from anyone since i was a little kid. No parties and no cake.

Birthdays are just another day like any other.

If your friends make a big deal about you going to this other friend's party.... then you know, it's a surprise party for you too.

I know we played this game with a couple of friend's whose birthdays were days from each other. We got one convinced that it was a surprise party for the other one so he would help plan... and then double whammy!

oh.. this party is being held at my other friends new girlfriends house so it's totally for Jon only, she's making a big deal out of it, it's not really the party per se, Ithink if Facebook hadn't reminded everyone it was my B-day my friends wouldn't have even said anything to me.
but whatever i just had to rant, now maybe my mood will get better, i've been grumpy all week.

That is a fabulous way to celebrate!!!

And a b-lated birthday to you, Riffster. I was also a bit moody myself lately.

I think you should mention to your wife that you would have liked a little more hopla on your Birthday..... She might surprise you.

Me.... I make my own Birthday special, sick day from work and a trip to Atlantic City or something else special to me, why wait for others.

Hey, sorry to hear, but I think unless there is an instigator around you (like your friend's girlfriend - someone who likes to make a big deal of these things) then as we hit the fourth decade it starts to get smaller. Last few years, I've had cards and a gift from the wife and kids and that is about it.
                          It's all good!

Yeah, I think 40th is a biggie and maybe your friends are still going to surprise you? Sorry to hear that you were disappointed.
