No matter how much pain, and suffering cops like that cause; Hell will much worse, when they get there.

"Sad to say, but I probably would have shot the dog myself. (I would have been quicker about it though.) "

Don, this comment doesn't surprise me since you openly admit you like guns and don't like animals much. (according to your COTM interview).

Well thank goodness there is some sanity prevailing...

The whole thing really saddens me.

Actually; I'm not a big gun fan.

            >The whole thing really saddens me.

Yeah; things like this can get out of hand pretty easy. I don't think the guys on the ground need shoulder the majority of the blame. I think it rests with whoever sent them in.

That SWAT team was doing their job...as the other people in that clip
put forth (in a composed manner as opposed to the outraged tone
of the guy onsceen), the event may have been a symptom of
needing a better, tighter procedure plan when it comes to drug busts...

...the biggest thing that stands out to me is that apparently if they
would'nt've been so stuck in red tape or limbo or whatever for 8 days,
then it may have been a totally different situation.

I don't understand how so many will call for retribution on the cops that went
in on the raid...they were merely doing their job...its the WAY that the job
was executed that was faulty...and hopefully stuff like this will help
minimize such problems in the future...unfortunately, you need to break a
few eggs to make an omelette....or in this case, an airtight SWAT proceedure.

The dog didn't attack so why shoot him? they waited a while in between shots to finish of the dog, the hell with that, fire them all. To me it just shows what dumb asses that City has for a swat team that they didn't even know there was a kid in the house or dogs

It has been pointed out already that is part of procedure...i.e. to nuetralize
an animal threat like that, no matter how cruel it may sound to some people's ears...
...with THAT in mind, what happened with HOW it was done, well, for one,
it was the heat of the moment and you never can tell
what any officer skilled or unskilled would do in that moment.

I adressed that earlier. There was some screw up there, so it has to be
examined why it took so long after the warrant was obtained to actually
go in. But the officers that actually DID go in, they were just doing their job.

                    >The dog didn't attack so why shoot him?

Like I said; at BEST he's an obstacle, at worst a threat. I wouldn't risk mine or my team's safety worrying about it.

                    >they waited a while in between shots to finish of the dog

THAT I disagree with. They should have done it quick and clean. Not just for the dog, but because a wounded dog is a bigger problem.

                    >they didn't even know there was a kid in the house or dogs

House clearing is a horrible job 'cos you NEVER know what you're walking into. The quality of your int matters, but you can't even appraise that until you've got boots on the ground and eyes on. Once you're in you've got less than a second to decide how dangerous anything you run into is. (Hence taking the dogs out right away.)

The outraged guy on the screen swings a heavy bat when it comes to law.

Judge Napolitano is the youngest life-tenured Superior Court judge in the history of the State of New Jersey. While on the bench from 1987 to 1995, Judge Napolitano tried more than 150 jury trials and sat in all parts of the Superior Court—criminal, civil, equity and family. He has handled thousands of sentencings, motions, hearings and divorces. For 11 years, he served as an adjunct professor of constitutional law at Seton Hall Law School, where he provided instruction in constitutional law and jurisprudence. Judge Napolitano returned to private law practice in 1995 and began television broadcasting in the same year.

I hear ya, but he coulda been Moses and I would've had the same reaction.

Regardless...its nice to know the guys background as I guess it puts
his presentationit in a little more context.

SPEAKING of context...that's how I am approaching this whole deal...its easy
to be disturbed when a dog gets killed...what's harder and more important
is to consider the grander context of the situation and how to improve it
with out getting bogged down in the smaller stuff.

The moral of the story is... marijuana shouldn't be illegal, would've avoided the entire mess. I've never used pot (or any illegal drug) myself but the fact that it's illegal while alcohol isn't is just nuts. People under the influence of alcohol are far more dangerous to themselves and the people around them than are people who smoke pot.

All of that said, it does sound like there was some faulty intelligence at work. If that is indeed the case, someone should have to answer for that.

lets not start nother "legalize weed" post. It's a political hotbed and is not allowed. You of all people should realize that Joe.

BTW I have enjoyed reading the debate on this subject. Some very interesting perspectives on the subject.
