    Today at work

Today as I was reviewing with 8th grade students U.S. history when one of my female students asked me "did you hear about Mr. Fake Name (sorry but can't give his name)". I said no and she told me that hhey found porn on his computer at work. Well I must have looked stunned because she asked if I was ok. After the shock the student also told me that the teacher would make comments like "nice headlights" and at times pretend to reach out and squeeze breasts. He also told a 14 year old girl that she would look good in a thong. To say the least I could not believe what I was hearing. I asked an A.P. and they confirmed that the teacher was on "admin leave". DAMN I'm still stunned. How did this pervert slip through? They fingerprint, do background checks and we go through a lengthy interview process. I am totally disgusted by this and would have preferred that that guy never have been at our school.

Frankly, finger prints and backgrounds checks don't have a connection to a
guy who likes porn and says inappropriate things to young girls.

And "lengthy interview process"? I can't imagine any guy that's looking for a
job as a teacher putting his foot in mouth so bad that it'd imply to the
interviewer that if he were to get a job as teacher that he would then make
    offcolor remarks to students.

Oh, that's really sad. The kids hopefully had a role in reporting that nonsense.

BTW.....I understand how you feel...but that really isn't directly in tandem with
                the remarks I made.

I think it probably hurts more for you, Teach, since it's your school.

If it were at my school, I can imagine that I might even feel like I was somehow "making it okay" because I didn't stop it, even though I didn't know about it. Irrational, but the job extends beyond just content knowledge.

It's just that when you see the same kids at the same school, and you know that some horrible person has done this, you get very protective of them.

                      Bingo.
And, believe or not *to whom it may concern"...

...I definitely TRY to have tact in my presentation of
my view on topics/debates/discussions----BUT even avoiding
                      politics & religion...
there's STILL a ton of touchy subjects.....verbally abusing children
                      being one of the biggies.

Yeah - I agreed with huedell's logic as well, I don't think that makes him a negative type of person to point out that the screening process wasn't going to be 100% effective.

In any case txteach it sounds like you had a really heavy day, but it's great to hear that the kids' claims weren't dismissed. All in all, the system did work and the good guys won before anything too unthinkable happened. So that's great to hear at least!

Back in the day when I was a student it seemed like 90% of all male teachers gave the girls at least a bit of the googly eye - enough that other students noticed.
This was in grade school and highschool.
Made me think that most male teachers were pervs to some degree.

As a student you see a lot more than you would then a fellow-teacher.

I'm sure there's a lot of good teachers out there --- but I bet there's a lot more pervs than you'd imagine.

Well, I'm really glad he got caught and I am glad that these days adults pay a lot more attention when kids report this kind of stuff. It's so sad how common it is. :(
