Yes, that and the children really cause the show's likeability to stumble a bit.., rather uncomfortable ideas to insure it's status as a 'family show'.

Luckily it ended on an upswing with episodes like 'Baltar's Escape', 'Experiment on Terra' and 'Hand of God'..

I haven't seen much of the original Battlestar but I own all the seasons of the new one. I didn't know that the Pegasus was in the original! That's really cool! Was Admiral Cain as hardcore scary in the original? Did he/she(?) try to command the whole fleet? Was it a similar story where Adama on Galactica has to rebel against Cain and the Pegasus?

Cain was played by Lloyd Bridges and was Commander Cain, not Admiral. I do not remember any tensions from a ranking standpoint between him and Adama, although I might have just forgotten it. They did engage a Battlestar and the Pegasus went off on it's own at one point and there was some question as to whether it was destroyed or not. Cain's daughter Sheba, who was played by Anne Lockhart, was left behind and became a regular on the show as a slight romance interest for Apollo.
