Vinyl is a different animal, records can sound better than CDs so I still have many records in my music collection (and yes, they still make turntables). Cassettes are crap though, I ditched all mine years ago. But Blu-ray is a definite improvement over DVD (with a few rare exceptions), so although I have no intention of upgrading my entire movie collection, I have upgraded my favourites as they've become available on Blu-ray, and for new movie releases, I always buy the Blu-ray version now.

Wow, I didn't know Sony made one of those, it sounds very tempting, I'll have to get some info on that. How is it working for you?

Yeah, that's what I said till I saw blu-ray for the first time. There is no comparison between the two.

A blu-ray player will play regular DVD's. So you don't lose anything. You just start purchasing blu-rays which come with a regular dvd copy and a blu-ray copy...so you get 2 discs in both formats.

And....the moment you watch a blu-ray disc on a high definition LCD or LED tv, you will be hooked...like crack

Is this the one you have?

I think I'll have to wait for a price drop before I can pick something like this up. The techgeek in me is drooling over this though, wish I had one!

That's exactly what I have and it is awesome. Don't listen to the reviews. That's just people who had buyer's remorse and were looking for excuses to return it. Yes, it takes an extra minute for the unit to retrieve the disc as it has to go get it, much like a jukebox. But it is sweet. I like being able to just put my discs in and know that they are not going to get touched in any way, even though they are durable. The unit also has a hard drive to rip stuff to and you can transfer hi-def footage from a hi-def camcorder and edit it and BURN it to a blank Blu-Ray disc. I have done a few weddings on it and the newlyweds were blown away that they could have their wedding on a hi-def blu ray disc. I see them on ebay from time to time for less than half that price, but that's still a lot.

Oh boy. I've been puzzling over this blu-ray thing since it began. I never questioned the need to replace vhs with dvd. All tape formats I've had experience with are really useful for portability and recording, but cassettes never brought the quality and since they were mostly made with pan and scan rather than proper ratio they are worthless to me. Maybe time is slipping away, but it seems like dvd is going to be replaced prematurely. VHS had it's day, just as vinyl had, but now stores are desperately trying to show dvd the door. I noticed the other day that Walmart had a "double feature" section consisting of a dvd and blu-ray version of the same movie, presumably so that people will be won over and switch to blu-ray.
Meanwhile, just how much difference is there gonna be between a dvd and a blu-ray version of Mars Needs Women or whatever. I can understand the new stuff being able to take advantage of the new technology, but those are mono tracks on many of those movies with (hopefully) the best print they could get. Will I be able to see Yvonne Craig naked if I see Mars Needs Women on blu-ray? I doubt it.
And what about all the movies that haven't even made it to dvd?

Oh man, that's a month long debate you opened up. True, beat up movies will look pretty much the same. But most of the Blu-ray releases get some sort of clean up and there are a ton of gems. One of my favorites, The Warriors, looks like a brand new movie on Blu-Ray. And even some real oldies look vastly improved. Errol Flynn's The Advertures of Robin Hood is astounding. I could list titles for days that look light years ahead of their DVD versions. Some only have subtle improvements, I'll give you that. But most are breathtaking

North by Northwest and Willy Wonka are a couple of others that come to mind quickly. You just have to see it to believe it. And I hate to open another can of worms, but hook a bluray up to a plasma to really see them pop. The other technologies look great as well, don't get me wrong, but I have seen (and owned) them all, and plasma is the best. Not as much of a difference as DVD and Blu-ray, but enough to have me hooked. There are a lot of cons with plasma as well, but I live with them for the picture

If there are good film elements still available, and they are properly restored and transferred, an older film can indeed look incredible in HD. But yeah, it really depends on the disc, I've seen some poorly done ones too, which is why it's always best to read reviews before purchasing/upgrading.

I agree about plasma. I don't have one yet, I currently have a Sony SXRD (LCoS rear projection) that I bought three years ago, which gives a really nice film like presentation (as opposed to the harsh digital look of many LCD TVs) but the next set I get will definitely be a plasma over LCD. I just wish that Pioneer didn't stop making their Kuro plasmas, those were the best of the best.

And that changer is kickbutt. I didn't know it came out in 2007, I missed that somehow.

I still play them, and record players are making a comeback since last year.

I also have a fantastic collection of vinyl. With all the great new equipment out there, I recently purchased a new turntable. While all the vinyl has been put on my iPod for car use, there is still nothing like the sound of a great record.

On a side note, I also have an 8-track player hooked up to my stereo system. Sometime the most obscure, weird music shows up at garage sales in the form of 8-tracks. I must have the equipment, however outdated, to listen to those odd finds.

Yeah, I have a 62" Samsung in the family room that is awesome, but I have a 60" Pioneer Kuro in my man cave that is just jaw droppingly gorgeous. We often find ourselves cramming all 4 of us back there to watch stuff just because how good it looks. Even though I put the addition on to make a family room where we could watch stuff with plenty of room!

It's a evaluation process for me whether to upgrade to blu-ray if I already have it on DVD.

Mars Needs Women will probably never get a blu ray release unless it gets more restored and cleaned up than the current DVD so it will most likely stay on DVD only.

Other older films I hope see the day on blu ray. There are some eye popping 50's and 60's technicolor extravaganzas that look great on HD cable and then I get the DVD and it's not as dazzling as what I saw on cable (and cable HD is not as good as blu ray HD).

I'd kill for "Pillow Talk" and other Rock Hudson/Doris Day movies from that mold on blu ray for instance. The use of color and the overall glossy 50's/early 60's decor looks incredible in HD so much so, I tolerate watching them on AMC complete with the commercials (I fast forward through) and the bugs and advertising overlays (usually for Mad Men and Breaking Bad).

But for many films, DVD's often suffice for me and the blu ray player does make them look better.

I'm all for DVD/Blu-Ray combos since a DVD still stands as being much more portable.
