Are Blu ray discs really delicate ?

Was reading on the internet a little known fact about Blu ray discs is their refective surface is protected only by a thin layer of rather soft lacquer - compared to a DVD's reflective surface being protected by a thin sheet of clear plastic.

It said Blu ray discs are prone to easier scratching, scuffing and playback problems compared to a factory made DVD.

Just wondering if this is true ? ...

Would seem like a really stupid thing to do, making them more fragile.
But they might have some problems that need to be worked out. They're just getting started.
I'm sticking to DVD myself, and hope to do that for as long as possible. Don't want to replace my collection....

Actually it's the opposite, because the data layer is so close to the surface compared to DVDs, Blu-ray discs have a special scratch proof coating on them. They are much harder to damage compared to DVD, most scuffs and marks can be wiped off easily and you really can't scratch them unless you really tried to damage them on purpose. It was the HD DVDs that had problems, those ones scratched easily, and often caused parts of the disc to become unplayable. I treat my HD DVDs very carefully because of that, but I'm not worried about my Blu-ray discs (still don't let my son touch them though )

I have a soundtrack record collection that I won't part with.
I worked really hard to get these, paying $$$ for imports.
I still play them, and record players are making a comeback since last year.

blu-ray players play DVDs, and actually make the DVDs look better. I have a huge collection of DVDs and a blu-ray player that I play my DVDs and small collection of blu-rays on. Blu-ray players are so affordable now days, as well as most blu-ray discs, it is all worth it.

As for blu-rays being fragile, I have never had any problems with mine, but I also put them in their case when I am done.

What he said. I've bought many used PS3 games (Blu-Rays) and have never seen a single permanent scratch, just thumb prints and the like.

I have a Sony 200 disc Bluray jukebox/server so my discs go straight into that and are never again seen by human eyes. So I cannot answer how durable mine are. I have rented quite a few from Netflix and have yet to get one cracked or unwatchable due to scratches.

Vinyl is making a comeback.
KISS released Sonic Boom on vinyl.
Course, it was a collectors deal, just as bad as Mattycollector....the darn 1000 Lps sold out in a flash and a ebay prices are thru the roof.

Is that so, thanks for the info. I have a gorgeous turntable that I have been kicking around selling since I redid my man cave and had no where to put it. Maybe now is a good time to unload it

Just these last few months, I've been to regular stores where they had three or four different models.
I'm going to get a decent new one, and hope it lasts me a lifetime.
