It's true that wandering around New York in and of itself is an adventure. As a much younger, hipper man of the nineties I wandered into a gallery opening in Soho and ended up at a Rave-style loft party until dawn. Last time I was there for a weekend I ended up stumbling onto a street festivel, then wandering into the big Virgin records where they handed me free tickets for the Kaiser Chiefs concert in a wonderful old-school theatre uptown.
Love the old bookstores, I could spend an entire NY vacation just book shopping.
For toys and comics, Forbidden Planet. Tokyo Toys in the east village is pretty awesome too.
There was a great Jazz Bar, I wish I could remember the name of it. Just south of harlem and the university.
FAO Schwartz is great for the Muppets.
I brought my roller shoes into the MOMA. Figured out the nooks that the guards were posted and rolled from the top to the bottow stopping only to casually walk past the guard-nooks.
