New York City - what do I do with myself?

We might try to go to Katz's while we're here- I know I'd like to. We hit the Carnegie Deli last time we were in town, and those two are "the ones" I've always had to hit.
We did the walking thing today, just got back in to the hotel. Was indeed windy and chilly, not by Minnesotan standards, so we were all good. Walked from SoHo just above the WTC site to Midtown East (51st and Lexington) in nowhere close o a straight line... quite a journey! Sadly, just like you guys mentioned, I think the weather this weekend might limit our options a bit, but oh well...

Put on an eye patch, black sleeveless T-shirt,grey camo pants and run around telling everybody your looking for the president or the duke of new york....“When you say “It’s hard”, it actually means “I’m not strong enough to fight for it”. Stop saying its hard. Think positive!”Comment

Hector- I'm not only a non-New Yorker, but I am of the Yiddish persuasion as well, so I will have plenty of ideas about Katz's if we go.
We actually talked about getting on Cash Cab on theway into town. The problem is that cabbing eerywhere costs enough tha we'd pretty mcuh just make back our losses if that happened!"If you take a dog which is starving and feed him and make him prosperous, that dog will not bite you. While in Times Square, don't forget to check out Madame Toussad's Wax Museum, and of course the FLAGSHIP Toys R Us Store!
If you visit the Empire State Building, get on the Skyride attraction. lots of fun.
AND if you must see a film, DO go to the Ziegfield Theater on west 54th Street. It is the last of the old style, elegant movie palaces (velvet red drapes, 1,500 seating, AMAZING sound system, HUGE screen). These types of theaters are a dying breed, and the West Coast's equivalent (Mann's Chineese Theater) doesn't even compare. It is a dump. Don't know if you're interested to see Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, but that is what's playing there.I... am an action figure customizerComment

If you're not Hector or reading isn't your thing, feel free to skip.
Well, I went to Katz's... it was ok. Decent food, crazy price even for New York, crowded as heck (which is fine and to be expected) and a very confusing system that's not explained up front. They give you a ticket on your way through the door and update it with whatever you buy as you go through the lines. You check out on your way out of the store- according to the sign over the exit, if you lose your ticket, even if you don't use it, there's a $50 charge (like a parking garage). I don't know if that's really enforced, but it seemed like a bit much.
The food was ok, and the sandwiches were good (I had the Reuben and my wife had Turkey), but other than the novelty of eating at Katz's, I didn't feel like I was getting anything I couldn't get anywhere else in terms of flavor, quality, etc. Also, when you ask for the Reuben they make it with pastrami. If I had it to do over again, I would ask for corned beef instead. Prices are around $15 a sandwich with no accoutrement other than a pickle plate, so even though they are pretty big (though Carnegie sandwiches were much bigger when I went) it's still quite spendy for what you get.
Overall, it was decent- interesting area of town with a ton of history (Lower East Side) that's now become kind of a trendy neighborhood, so it was cool to sort of cruise aorund there.
That's about all we did yesterdya before the weather went to hell- Saturday was pretty much a loss, so I'm hoping things get better as today rolls on (supposed to, but we shall see)."If you take a dog which is starving and feed him and make him prosperous, that dog will not bite you. check out Jeckle and Hydes.....kind of pricey but what isn't in NYC. Food is okay but it is really the atmosphere and "show" you go there for. If you didn't aleady do it, take Mikeys advice and go see Strawberry Fields in Central Park.Comment

By the sounds of it...decent sandwiches but overpriced. I guess the experienced of being in that area sort of made it kind worth it though. Right?
I'm glad you went...and thanks again for sharing your experience eating and being at Katz's.

Oh yeah- the experience was well worth it, especially since my Great-Granddad originally lived in the LES when he forst came over here, so we got to check the area out.
On a funny side note, we actually went right by Jekyll and Hyde's on our way to Strawberry Fields today- thought about going in, but ultimately did not... I do kinda like the idea of the spectacle, though."If you take a dog which is starving and feed him and make him prosperous, that dog will not bite you.
