We're considering selling them, but how can you fix a price when you don't know the first thing about it?
We'd need a reliable advisor....
Get more than one offer if possible. Check out stamp dealers locally if or look in stamp magazines (I don't know what is available in Belgium) to discover the dealers that are looking to buy. The biggest mistake many people make is to look in price guides and think they are rich. Dealers commonly sell their stamps for a percentage of catalog prices and buy for even less. But look anyway and good luck, JOHN (PS. I'd love to buy myself but it's a very long drive/flight/drive to see what you've got!)
I know that many public libraries in the U.S. have stamp guide books that they will lend out to you (not sure if that is true in Belgium).
It might be worthwhile to look them up and see what the guidebook says. As was already stated; price guides don't necessarily reflect prices but at least will give you an idea of what is rare and of value.
Sometimes, it is difficult to find honest dealers but there are some out there. We have a local place here that buys and sells coins, stamps, and sports cards. The owner has a good reputation because he is very honest with people. I have been in there just looking around and will see someone bring in a pile of old silver coins inquiring about selling them. The dealer always asks if they know which ones are the rare dates and stamps from the coins they bring in and if they don't....he tells them. He also will tell them what they are worth in melt value, etc.
If someone comes in with a pile of coins and doesn't really want to go through the process of looking through all of them to see if they have key dates or marks even if the owner tells them which ones they are and how to find them; he's always willing to pay them at least a fair price so he can mark them up to a fair resale value and take a chance that he might happen upon a rare coin.
