    Pete Seeger

So yesterday I am taking the wife to see Avatar in 3d. And we are stopped at a red light by a main interestion on Route 9. every weekend the veterans are on one side of the intersection with signs for supporting the troops and on the other side of the intersection are always the peaceniks.

Now let me say I am all for supporting our troops. that does not mean I support war or that the verterans group does either, it just means they are supporting the men and women that are dying overseas to maintain peace. I always honk for the veterans group.

anyway, I digress, this one weird looking guy in a trenchcoat was standing off to the side from the veterans holding a sign that read "Komrade Seeger is a communist stooge." I thought to myself, come on, now they are picking on Pete Seeger? The guy has been through this his whole life and he's like 90 now. Sure enough, we look over to the other side and there is Pete with his guitar. just hanging with the peace rallyers. He is a local resident but I have never seen him out and about. He's a no frills guy, no security around. he has someone helping him carry his equipment and that was all.

thought it was kind of cool that the guy came out, in the cold to sit and sing with them.

That is pretty cool, that you saw him out in public. I actually like a lot of his old songs.

that is pretty cool. I would've found a place to park and watch and listen for a little bit. He has to be getting pretty far up there. You may never get that opportunity again.

Pete Seeger is a musician who helped popularize folk and roots music which led to the boom of the early 1960s. He wrote (or co-wrote) the songs "Turn, Turn, Turn" (best known version recorded by The Byrds), "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" and "If I Had A Hammer."

Calling him a Communist is pretty dumb considering he was one of the musicians who performed at a concert in support of Polish resistance against the Soviets in the early 1980s, but that's what passes for informed political discourse these days.

with respect to nostalgiabuff, "seeds of a disaster thread"
were planted with the first post. I won't take sides here...
but I will easily note Seeger's songwriting talent...I've always thought
his signature tunes were quite an accomplishment in songwriting.

well the post was really about seeing Peter Seeger out and about. the other info was just to put it all in perspective, but yeah, I realized when posting some people might make it a political thread.

Pete just turned 90 recently. they did a big tribute concert, Springsteen and a lot of rock icons performed with him...just to give an idea of how respected the man is in the music industry

I'm not a folkie, definitely not a hippy either, but I love Pete Seeger. The dude's a true rebel.

Seeger is/was a card carrying member of the Communist Party, so why is it dumb to call him one? Politics aside, I have a great appreciation for all he's done to champion the cause of Folk music. I'm an ever bigger fan of his younger brother Mike, who recently died.

Hey, man....it's always been an "American" trait to be able to exercise peaceful dissent and a given that if you disagreed, you were tolerant of said peaceful dissent.

As far as Seeger being there, Seeger served in the US Army from 1942 to 1945. As far as I am concerned, he could be on either side of the street and it is fine with me. He earned his right....beyond what we all get at the outset.
