I may not be a regular listener, but you could glean that much just from reading posts/news on the Internet.
Sorry, as a regular listener for years, going to have to debate you on that.

Artie's role on the show has nothing to do with him doing drugs. Stern and crew have worked hard to get Artie clean for years. Stern was really disturbed a few years back when he found out Artie had been secretly doing some drugs while at the show.

A lot of Artie's act and comedy deals with his troubled life, but that has nothing to do with Stern or otherwise. They've worked a long time to help Artie and he's a valued asset of their show.

I hope Artie pulls through and turns away from being self destructive.

This is sad news. I have been a listener since the 1980's when he was in Washington D.C. on D.C. 101 and even moved over to Sirius with him but finally stopped when I got a job 10 miles from home and the cost of service just wasn't worth it to me.

Although I do find Stern a very funny guy, I do agree with Hue in the sense that the show and all of the staff poke fun at one another at each other's expense. Some of it is funny but I do think it goes a little overboard. I do remember when Artie was going through drug issues and was going to leave the show; they were all making fun of his drug addiction.

I can see the comedic value in poking fun at yourself and others but sometimes it just crosses the line. I actually think Stern is a lot funnier when he makes no attempts to go over the top.

Most of the show seems based on schadenfreude which is not something I find particularly funny.

I think (unfortunately) with Stern it's a "baby and the bathwater"
"pound of flesh" scenario much of the time when it comes to these issues.

I went all medieval in that one post earlier in this thread...firstly,
because I had been gathering up a very skeptical attitude
to Hector's thoughts regarding Stern over the years and
had just decided to lay it all out because Hector
seemed to tee it up for me beautifully.

STILL, there's no mistaking that there ARE things I find nice about Stern,
particulalry many aspects of his sense of humor He makes me laugh...
HE DOES......alas... as I'm attempting to say, it's been "too much"
"over the top" too many times...which is something
that seems inherently wrong in the "values" dept. but inherently right
in keeping the "boundary pushing" aspect of Howard's schtick alive...
which, I believe, is vital to his persona...in the end.

I think the guy'd rather lose sleep at night, and step on the wreckage left
in the wake of dominating glory, than feel he's losing ratings or
              losing his edge.

As a Stern listener, I find this post of yours way more accurate.

Wow huedell, great post. I couldn't agree more. I'm like the guy who got stung by a zillion bees and survived when it comes to Stern. Plenty of honey over the years, but one more sting and I'm a goner.

Thanks for the nod...I have to say...a lot of credit for a post like that
has to go to Howard himself as he is one of the most astounding entertainers of our era---and therefore one of the most impressive
people to "muse" about...whether you're a fan or not is really inconsequential
                    in that area IMO.

---he has made so many accomplishments in the entertainment industry that have touched so many lives it is (again) "astounding"...now, whether we
conclude that this is a bad mark on our culture or a good one...aye, THAT is
the question...and obviously one that can be debated forever with
great zeal but, of course, never definitively answered.
