A date that will live in infamy.

I still wonder if the Japanese actually thought their Pearl Harbor attack would really knock us out of the war completely ?
If so, that was about the biggest mistake anyone has ever made militarily in world history.

This is going to sound a bit hokey, but I really believe the United States is being protected and looked after by a higher power ... and they (or him or her) intervene when necessary.

The Pearl Harbor attack is a great example .....
The Japanese knocking out US battleships at a time when they are already starting to become obsolete is just one example ...

I'm not saying the US has never been delbt a heavy blow ...
I'm just saying the blows were never detrimental to the point of being unrecoverable from.

I really think somebody up there is watching out for us.

If all of our Aircraft carriers were at Pearl they may have dealt a knockout blow. If they caught our aircraft carriers I think a third wave would have been used by the Japanese and would have crippled us in the east.

I have watched a few documentaries of the subject and if I'm not mistaken the Japanese knew that if the U.S. entered the war; they were toast.

They saw the naval fleet in Hawaii increasing in strength and were worried that the U.S. would attack Japan with a large naval fleet so rather than wait it out; they risked taking a preemptive strike and knock out as much of the Pacific fleet as possible and hoped that U.S. morale would be so low after the attack that we would crawl back to the continent with our tails between our legs.

Seems weird thinking how much of a different world it is today compared to back then.

Imagine today Germany or Japan attacking ANYONE ... not to mention countries like France, England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland and the Scandinavian peninsula ...
The US would be there so fast the attackers wouldn't have a chance to even reload.

... and it wouldn't matter who was in the White House at the time.

It was due to the terms of surrender. Both Germany and Japan no longer have much of a standing army to speak of so we have to provide military protection to both countries.

It is interesting to see how both countries have thrived economically since the end of the war.

As a Polish American, I still can't forget the betrayal of Poland by the Allies after the war.

After the war the US pumped untold millions of dollars into Germany and Japan and left Poland (an Ally from day 1) to rot for almost 60 years under Soviet occupation.

Really a low shameful point in the history of the allies

But you're forgetting that the Soviet Union was an "ally". Plus, what realistic demands could the west put on the Soviets? The Red Army was occupying all of Eastern Europe. Short of war, how do you tell them to leave? Hell, it was hard enough just keeping a part of Berlin!

                            Honestly ?

We should have done what Patton suggested and marched the Soviets back to their own territory ... Once we hit Berlin, just keep on marching.

Don't forget this was pre anyone else having the bomb ... (which we wouldn't have used anyway in Europe)
