    More "Old-School" Gym Games

Anyone ever play "Geronimo" or "Man From Mars"? Similar concept to both, running tag games, with slight variations...

In "Geronimo" when everyone runs, if you get tagged you're turned into a tree and must stayed planted with only arms outstretched to make new tags.

In "Man From Mars" you chant in unison...
"Man From Mars, can you chase us to the stars?"
    "Yes", he replies
    "What color?"
Once he picks a color, you have a split second to quickly look down and see if you're wearing that color and if you have to run. Then a melee ensues as you make a break for it.

I went to grade school in the early 70s but it was obvious that the titles of these games were left-overs from the 50s or 60s.

Always liked these 2 better than "Steal the Bacon" or "Fire, Water, Ice".

    Good Times!

I play Man From Mars and Steal the Bacon w/ my kids, but the rules in MFM are different the way we play:

"Man (or woman) from Mars, Man from Mars, come and take us to the stars!"
Person who's it: "Whoever is wearing______ (or has ______ ) gets a free walk." Wait til they walk across. "Blue 42, blue 42, GO!" Then everyone else runs.
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

We played Geronimo but called it Freeze Tag.
We also played Red rover where two lines of people would join hands and face the other line about 10-15 feet apart. Then you dare someone to come over. The dared person would run as fast as they could and try to run between 2 people and break thier grip. We woiuld chant something like Red Rover, Red Rover we dare "so and so" over.

Some more I played at various times growing up...

              Mother May I?

Simon Sez (not the electronic version either)

              Flashlight Tag

              Capture the Flag

Call the Cops complaining about noise, set of a brick of fireworks when you noticed the black and white cruiser rounding the corner, and then all go running across the street in different directions to see who the cops chased. (We never really came up with a name for that one, but Juvenile Delinquents would have been an adequate description).

...and lots of others I am sure people will remember and probably post as well

(and mine was a Freeze Tag neighborhood as well)

I also remember playing crab soccer. The PE teacher had a ginormous sized ball that was very light weight, we played on teams and the object of the game was to crawl around belly side up using just the palms of your feet and hands to move like a crab and try to score by moving the ball to the other side of the gym wall.

We played Ghosty Ghosty in the Graveyard. It's pretty much hide and seek in the dark.

British Bulldog was all the rage when I was kid until they banned it.

It was basically two teams and a lot of tackling, I was addicted.
