That's a good point. Sometimes when we coach youth soccer, we'll tell an 8 year old to play on the right side of the field. They line up on the left side, you tell them move to the right side, they look at you like your crazy, and finally you say "the other right side of the field"

In short. . . . .I certainly don't buy it. And I have been running a Joey scout group (6 and 7 year olds), for a few years. . . .the best way to get them to tell left from right is to ask which hand they pick there nose with (very few left handers luckily). So pre-schoolers aren't likely to even be able to knowingly answer the question. Beyond taking a 50 : 50 guess, favouring the left, as we offer left first when giving the option (left or right).
Doing this basically taught all American kids right from left.
Not sure if they still do the pledge of allegiance today, but it was great for teaching right from left at an early age.Comment
