Are you smarter than a pre schooler?

Which way is the bus below traveling?
To the left or to the right?

    Can't make up your mind?
Look carefully at the picture again.

    Still don't know?
Pre-schoolers all over the United States
were shown this picture asked the same question.
90% of the pre-schooler's gave this answer.

    (scroll down for the answer)

'The bus is traveling to the left.'

When asked, 'Why do you think the bus is traveling to the left?'

    They answered:

'Because you can't see the door to get on the bus.'

Think B.A. Where did you hide the Megos?

I would have said it's going to the right ...

Only because reading from left to right makes me subconsciously think everything is going from left to right ...

I would have said it's not moving.
            Fresh, not from concentrate.

That was my initial thought, but since they specifically asked to the left or to the right I would've said the same thing Mike did for the same reason

I agree with boss, it's clearly not moving. Dumb pre-schoolers!

Y'know, as someone who has taught pre-schoolers, and school-age children, I doubt this. Most pre-schoolers don't remember right from left. Heck some grade school kids don't either! They may have pointed and the case workers interpreted it as left. It's possible that they mentioned the door, but I dunno about that either. Most pre-schoolers aren't logical thinkers. But I think, I'll test this theory next week at my school. I'll let you guys know.

That's true. My pre-schooler hasn't even grasped the right/left concept yet. He still tries to put his left shoe on his right foot almost every day, so he sure isn't going to think logically about which way that bus is going.

I am obviously NOT the World's Greatest Detective. I didn't notice the "lack of door".

I actually figured it out...not sure that is saying much.

I will say that the Are You Smarter than a 5th grader show is rigged. No way, do those kids know some of those harder answers unless they were specifically taught for the show.

I don't think many people would apply that level of logic to it, given that it is a highly stylized, depiction, more like a logo or trademark, that you wouldn't assign a missing door as being significant. These type of images, we are trained to see as a simple representation, not depicting the entirity of a working vehicle.

In short. . . . .I certainly don't buy it. And I have been running a Joey scout group (6 and 7 year olds), for a few years. . . .the best way to get them to tell left from right is to ask which hand they pick there nose with (very few left handers luckily). So pre-schoolers aren't likely to even be able to knowingly answer the question. Beyond taking a 50 : 50 guess, favouring the left, as we offer left first when giving the option (left or right).
