I mentioned this in the kickball thread, but in addition to regular Dodgeball, we played a variation called Battle Ball. It essentially was like a Dodge Ball firing squad. Both teams lined up against the opposite gym walls, and the first thrower got a "free throw" to see if he could hit someone, score a point, and get the game going. Then it went into the usual Dogeball procedures.

I was actually very good at both games, to the surprise and chagrin of the "jocks" who excelled at other sports.

Believe it or not, but we never played Dodge Ball. Our PE Teacher was kickball everyday.

I still have flashbacks from the horror that was dodgeball. Oddly enough it seemed to be the Juniors and Seniors against the Freshman. Oddly enough the juniors & seniors were all football players and the gym coach was also the football coach. They picked us off one by one day after day. When you're only 4'8" and 94lbs as a freshman you make a very easy target. I'm not bitter or resentful I just hated gym class in the winter my freshman year.

Being the typical 80's nerd, I found the game to be EVIL, especially since my school's football team was in the same PE class as I was. Their goal was not to hit you with the ball, but to maim you with it.

Luckily, my fellow nerd and I figured out as the team first ran out to grab the balls, we casually walked off as tho we'd already been hit. No one noticed.

I always liked it. It was a good way to get aggression out of your system. In
my day no one held grudges afterwards.

In 5th-8th grade we called it "Slaughter Ball" and played it in the mat room,
for wrestling, in the basement of the school. It was really wild because you
could get the balls to bounce off the part of the walls that were matted. It still counted it you caught the ball or got hit from the wall.

When my family moved in 8th grade my new school called it "Bombarment". My
first day of gym class as the new guy I was singled out until the end. I fully
expected this and figured it was just part of being the new kid. I was thin and
quick in those days so they had to work before they were finally able to pummell me. It didn't really hurt and my gym teacher and some of my new classmates complimented me for "surviving" as long as I did.
