I have no kids but I am a teacher, and for 8 hours a day, those kids are mine. Just let someone TRY and slap them.
As for the mother...
I wouldn't have forgiven that guy. And I've had kids throw screaming fits on field trips before. I remove them from the situation. We'll step outside, out in the hall, whatever. But shopping isn't so important (esp. if you haven't paid for the items) that you can't stop what you're doing and comfort and or discipline them, or just leave and try shopping again later.
But that guy was a wrong as 2 left shoes, and I would have kicked his butt!
Sometimes, as a parent you are trapped in the store between a rock and a hard place. If I am shopping (I mean items that my house must have, not anything like stuff for a hobby, etc.) and my cart is half-full in mid trip, it is kinda hard to just walk away from the store. Maybe I wouldn't finish the other half of the shopping, but I would still need to get in line to pay. The choice would be that or go home and find a time that my wife, me or someone could watch the kids. Sometimes with our schedules, that could not be for days. My 4 year old if he has a tantrum can go for a good half hour. Is that bad parenting, no, he does not go crazy all of the time, but like all kids, they sometimes get a good steam going when you are out in public.
Yes, I get it! I stated that earlier on in this thread. I get it! What part of I get don't YOU get? I realize that kids cry for various reasons. I do not have to have kids to understand some of the things that they do. Whether or not it is their job to do so is another subject of discussion. True that kids cry...Generally when kids cry the parent is "supposed" to step in and comfort the kid and quiet them down. I have seen this done before. I know it can be done if the parent is willing to at least TRY on their part. The kid just does not continue to cry and cry and cry forever. That is not a friggin "job" for a kid to do. That is more like a torture chamber that everyone has else to deal with no thanks to the idiot parent that cannot at least try and control their kid. This whole issue could have been avoided if the Mother would have taken her kid out to the parking lot or rest room or some where and tried to comfort and or calm it down. Instead she pretty much tried the guy's patience and taunted him to do it. I am not saying that what he did was right. He is obviously going to pay for his actions now as a results and rightfully so. It was definitely a bad judgement on his part.
You're going on and on here with freakin' semantics "hit" "slap" whatever...
the bottom line is: THIS GUY STRUCK ANOTHER PERSON'S CHILD
If you think that's actually acceptable then THAT'S IT
and we can (strongly) agree to disagree.
"Even know it was the wrong thing to do by todays standards"
Acceptable? No! I am not advocating to people that it is right for anyone to go out and slap or hit or abuse any kid in any way. Sheesh!
What I meant by today's standards is I have heard that back in the day kids were actually slapped in their faces. Kids used to get paddled at school......kids used to get a ruler across their hand if they were bad. And the list no doubt goes on and on.....Again, I am not saying or advocating that it was right to do so then or now. It is something that happened during that era just like slavery...which was also wrong....AND I had absolutely no control over. I am just merely stating the facts. In other words do not blame me for someone elses ignorance.
If it were me I would not have touched the kid. I would have punched the parent in the head instead for testing me.
dude, dont you get it? the kid was 2....2 .............. 2 year olds cry...it's what they do, it's there job!!

Don't know what the dude's problem is. Every time I hear a kid throwing a fit in the store, I just chuckle to myself and say better them than me and walk away.
I agree if it was my kid, I would knocked the **** out of him. Nobody has a right to lay a hand on your kid.
But...
How is it the mothers fault, maybe it's not, but I have seen and heard it a million times, kids screaming to the top of their lungs and the parent acting like it's birds singing. Their job is to get the kid out of there. If they don't I have no problem telling them that they are idiots.
Was it a "hit" or was it just a slap? There is a BIG diference. If I hit you you would defiitely feel it. If I slapped you...you would live to tell about it. I am not for sure I was not there to witness what actually took place. I am just going by what the story read.
