Most Important Event of the 20th Century?

With today being the 40th anniversary of the 1st moon landing, what do think is the most important event of the 20th Century?

    Moon Landing
    Kitty Hawk
    Bikini Island
    Something else?

I say Kitty Hawk, sorry Buzz and Neal.

    1. The defeat of the Axis powers.
It literally changed the entire world into what we know it is today.

    2. The Beach Boys release Sloop John B

      Depends on your perspective IMO.

Looking back in 100 years it will still be Kitty Hawk or the Allies victory, the invention of penicillin, television or even the internet.

Looking back in 1000 years however, when (and if!) humans have moved out into the solar system and beyond, I think Apollo 11 will be the key 'fact' from the 20th Century. The first steps of mankind on an extraterrestrial body will only increase in importance while other events fade. We can't see it now because the space programme has essentially stalled since the 70's and there's no sense of urgency or wonder associated with it like there once was. I blame the shuttles. Kind of fun, but did they need to occur before we took the next obvious step, i.e. Mars?

There are so many things that would flow from it too, we've just got to get going. Want to defeat terrorists and backward religious zealots? Wave to their kids from Mars :-) No ideology could compete with an accomplishment like that.

I actually do think we are on the brink of a new space race though, geo-politics will see to that. I don't blame the US for stagnating since Apollo, champions need competition to keep improving, and the US has had none for 30 years. Just wait until someone plants a Chinese flag on the moon though, it will all be on again. Just hope I'm still around to see it!

I know it was invented in the 1880's but it was perfected in the 1900's

              D-Day.

But the Moon Landing has every right to be up there. I'd say Kitty Hawk was an important preparatory event, but was the small step toward that giant leap that took us to the Moon.

I think computer stuff will be forgotten quicker (in the future) then most people think.

World events have a longer lifespan then inventions.

Ask someone in Zimbabwe if they think the airplane, moon landing or computers will go down in history as very important events.

I have to agree that the end of WWII was a focal point in the world, but without Kitty Hawk even that part of history would be different.
                          It's all good!

                              And of course:
The invention of the action figure.
                              The birth of motion pictures.
