I would hate to see Superman brought back and made "dark" like Batman trying to bring in the new modern audience.

Batman works dark because it's a part of his character going way back... So it's not out of place.
Superman dark would be a joke and a laughing stock.
It would be like bringing back Mr Rogers and trying to make him dark and cutting edge.

If they did want to try something different, I would suggest basing a new Superman movie on Max Fleischer's version -- including the suit.
Set the movie in WW2 ...
Have Superman JUMP but not fly...
    That would be interesting

I agree that "dark" is definitely not the way to go, but too light (Brandon Routh) or stumbling Clark isn't either.

I'm looking for something in the middle ...

        Hey , Hector.......counterpoint this.

Batman is better than Superman because he is easier to cast in a movie.

Seriously, Batman is easier to cast because of the dark nature, a gritty realism that Supes could never have, the fact that a cowl and rubber-armored costume can hide a lot (heck, apparently, it makes sense in Hollywood to even give Bats some nipples).

With Supes, you need a well-built Dude who can pass as Milquetoast Clark Kent, can't be well-known, and must be able to convey an image of the ultimate Boy Scout who could kick yer arse, yet chooses not to, even though he really should (make that believable in any medium).

That's no small order, my friends.

There had been a rumor of the next film being called Superman: Man of Steel. In fact, there is an entry for it on IMDB:

Yes, but no connection with the Metropolis TV movie rumor (which I believe came up before Welling had re-signed for multiple more seasons).

I've read the NEXT batch of posts since my last posts and am highly amused
by the diverse and divergent ideas brought forth in such a short stack of
                opinions.

Good LUCK plesaing THIS crowd WB!

                My opinion?

Don't mess with the overall Reeve vibe too much.

Make the Reeve-esque movie the MAJORITY of people WANT to see.

i.e. not III, IV, or SR

Routh/Singer would've succeeeded but they pushed the boundaries too much.

                SHORT TRANSLATION:
Make the "new" Superman, much like the Reeve Superman but with
no direct ties to him/his continuity.
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix

I have heard that they are indeed looking to reboot. They want the film to have a darker tone like the Nolan Batman films. Actually The Shazam film in in development hell because of this too. WB wants it darker and John August wanted it to be Big meets Superman. Taht being said I am surprised that Routh is out of his contract. I was hearing he was locked in no matter what. Well might be a good thing, time will tell.

I think it all comes down to the exact definition and extent of "dark"... (especially the latter). If you can make it as "dark" as say Iron Man, fine... but turning Supes into the Dark Knight is WAY too much overkill...

A SERIOUS adventure story (with the "boy scout" angle toned down) would be great but excessively dark would turn off as many, I think (given the character). I want a POWERFUL superman, but not an excessively dark one... (he still has to have a humanity to be Supes while looking like he can be taken seriously)

Rather than a Christopher Reeve vibe, I'd say more of a George Reeves (on Alex Ross steriods both physically and emotionally)... Take equal parts Alex Ross version and Curt Swan version and mix ??

It is really a balancing act ... and whatever you do, it has to blend into the "tone" of future DC films if they EVER hope to make a JLA ....

We'll just have to wait and see.... (plenty to keep us all speculating!! )

                      sniff...and that's what it's really all about.
