Very true Hector. When I posted about Ed McMahon's death on another board...one of the regular posters from the U.K. didn't know who he was...

Yeah, if it wouldn't have been for Carson and his huge impact, well......who was Ed? Tonto to the Lone Ranger.

However, I gained a whole new respect for Ed after he died when I learned he had a distinguished career as a Marine. I knew he served, but he served with great distinction.

I'm a Military Man so that will resonate with me. Ed was freaking remarkable, in my estimation, having attained the rank of Colonel in the Marine Corp. Nothing to sneeze at, but I wouldn't expect anyone outside of the US or anyone who hasn't been around the Military to get just how cool his accomplishments were.

Well they are celebrities to me and I live in the USA and I really don't track "celebrities" from Botswana and the Ukraine these days.

          It's an American thing. Sorry.
Yeah, I'm sure someone like Sophia Loren, Paul McCartney or Julio Iglesias would elicit a worldwide response but we're talking about our own home-grown celebrities for the most part. If they are world-famous then that's just a bonus.

As far as Ed is concerned, does anyone remember the stars that were discovered during his run on Star Search? Good Lord, it far and away exceeds the talent that has come out of American Idol by leaps and bounds.

Now, I know Ed didn't have anything to do with their success, but he was a part of a very major talent show that seems to be lightly regarded these days.

Star Search - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Scroll through this list. It is more significant than Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Non-Winner Jennifer Hudson. (The only real notables from American Idol.) Hell, one of the lesser notables in the Star Search list is now a judge on American Idol. In fact, you will recognize tons of names in the list and think, "Good Lord!". Tons of comedians and singers were discovered by that show and whether they won or not, they got the needed exposure.

Grief-Stricken Jackson Fans Swamp Amazon and iTunes

By Scott Morrison and Ben Charny

                  of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones)--Michael Jackson's sudden death returned the pop superstar to the top of the music charts, with grief stricken fans swamping Internet sites such as Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) and Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) iTunes in a frenzied bid to snap up his songs and videos.

Amazon said sales of Jackson CDs were more than 700 times greater on Thursday than they were the previous day and accounted for 60% of all music sales on the site yesterday. Demand was so great that Amazon ran out of stock within minutes after his death was reported, the company said.

Yeah, if you check out iTunes he has all the top spots for song, albums, and videos. It must be humbling for some of the upstarts who think *they* are superstars.

Oh wow, really? Then you missed Farrah dying and the Oxi-Clean guy and Gale Storm (My Little Margie. old B&W show from the early 50's).
